Gross weight of assembled watch 92.0 dwt (143.2 g). The watch strikes the quarters with three hammers on three gongs. The exceptional workmanship and elegant signature are of the level of quality from other makers that Breguet would have sold in his shop, a practice he started during his partnership with Gide after the French Revolution. EPW - French design patent oversize musical watch with exposed escapement and cylindrical musical roll, 66mm, gunmetal (acier garanti) OF original case, unusual SW-pin-set system where one pulls the stem out to allow winding and pin-setting, while pressing the crown in suspends any connection, fancy WED with polychrome floral vine above escapement aperture, fancy gilt hands, cylinder escapement, jeweled governor, at least 8J pending disassembly, spotted and fausses-côtes NI damascene, s#780 on case and mvt, s#20 on comb-block. Gross weight of assembled watch 154.6 dwt (240.5 g). This rare and unusual mechanism operates off of a single mainspring, the barrel driving the time train, and a separate click assembly driving the musical train from the mainspring arbor. By moving the slide toward the pendant, the music is activated, and if the slide is returned the music will complete its cycle, or if left on, will continue to play until the mainspring runs down. The watch is in superb condition with the best sound one will hear in any musical watch of any variety. Sabrier and Rigot show the same watch without dial decoration on page 199 of "Ore d'Acciaio" (published in English as "Steel Watches"), and an alarm variant on page 182. Such watches from the end of the 19th century are far more rare than the musical watches from the early part of the century. Estimate: $1,600 - $2,400

Gross weight of assembled watch 49.1 dwt (76.4 g). Note that it was the Strasbourg convention to work in 16.5K, but when part of France, there was also work done in 22K following the Paris convention. Strasbourg also only used the date letters in this period without other quality hallmarks, here only with a six-petal mark that may be the maker's sign. It is quite rare to see this date marking from what was a small city at the time. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500

EPW - Henry Jenkins, Cheapside, London (two listings), verge fusee with rare Masonic dial, 51mm, sterling silver OF original pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1763, incuse casemaker's mark "WT" under crown for William Thomas of Garlick Hill, KWKS, WED with underglaze painting of Masonic symbols, poker & beetle hands, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, s#933, number repeated in both cases. Gross weight of assembled watch 66.8 dwt (103.9 g). There are two listing in the same time period for this name, one for a famous and highly regarded clock and watchmaker, author of a book on astronomical timepieces, whose superb clocks can be found in the British Museum and at major auctions. The second and likely this maker came from Cornwall ca 1730, worked at Cheapside from 1756 to 1774 with a bankruptcy proceeding in 1765, then went on to Aldersgate Street until 1782. As for English masonry coming out of older origins, the "Grand Lodge of England" was established in 1717, and the rival "Antient [sic] Grand Lodge of England" in 1751, only to unify in 1813. The present Masonic watch would then come from the first 50 years of lodge Freemasonry in England, and may give clues to its precise affiliation. Estimate: $600 - $1,000

EPW - Henry Sandoz, Le Locle, large gold minute repeating chronograph in original box, 60mm, very heavy 18K rose gold original HC with elaborately engraved gold cuvette with full specifications, sold by Armand & Cie, Genève, SW-SS, WE-SSD, lever escapement, jeweled hammers and governor wag, perhaps 21J, fausses-côtes NI damascene, s#35935 inside case. Gross weight of assembled watch 112.6 dwt (175.1 g). The governor is covered with the silver armorial crest used by Sandoz in some of the company's repeaters, a knight's helmet over escutcheon with embraced hands, and the phrase "Sine Dolo" beneath ("without guile" in the sense of without deception), a trademark registered in 1904. The case has Maltese cross logo for "J&Co," possibly Jeanneret & Co, the logo unknown. The large, fitted mahogany box has inlaid mother-of-pearl plaque, and the top-silk reads, "Répétition Chronographe.". Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000

This watch apparently comes from a short-lived series between the keywind period and Jurgensen's more evolved bow-setting period where Piguet Brothers ébauches were used. EPW - Kwong Shing, Chinese market lever with rare 24-hour dial with astrological indications, 56mm, silver OF original case with hunting back and spring-loaded decorative silver cuvette, bearing both Chinese markings and faux London hallmarks, KWKS, WED with inner chapter repeating numerals from 1 to 12 twice, each two-hour section with astrological symbols corresponding to constellations around the earth, and actually doubling as true 12-hour system indicators as the hands are geared for normal 12-hour rotation, lever escapement with capped pallet, 12-16J, elaborately engraved gilt mvt, s#133472 within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 65.8 dwt (102.3 g). As with some world time watches, the chapter or dial indications are there so that one can calculate based on the 12-hour information being displayed. Of course, the chapter of actual zodiacal symbols will always be rotating relative to the earth's 24-hour solar rhythmicity, roughly once per annum for a complete rotation at sidereal rate, so a further calculation would be made relative to the calendar and initial positions of the stellar background to arrive at any meaningful interpretation of the dial. This calculation can be done roughly in one's mind, using the dial as an aid. Watch comes with two keys. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500

The design is unique, with all repeat work mounted on the back plate under glazed cuvette, the glass drilled for winding and setting, the mvt mounted entirely in a solid gilt band that frictions into the gold case body, and is released by only a single screw at 6 with the back cover open. The balance bridge is skeletonized polished steel. The case has a pull to release the back latch, which only needs to be pulled toward the pendant to release the back, something not everyone has understood, as it appears to be a tiny button. A small case-knife split has occurred at 9 on the bezel from one attempt at opening. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000

EPW - "Normal Watch," (Achille and Leon Hirsch, La Chaux-de-Fonds), very massive oversize world time travel watch displaying time in six cities, 64mm, large square gunmetal OF original case with hunting back that may act as an easel for desk or nightstand display, glazed observation cover over mvt, SW-pin-set which sets all cities simultaneously, fancy WED with six sub-dials including constant seconds, showing times for Paris, Central Europe, New York, Nouméa, London and St Petersburg, gold hands, lever escapement, 15J, gilt mvt, s#179 on case. Gross weight of assembled watch 158.1 dwt (245.9 g). Nouméa is a French collective at the southern tip of New Caledonia in the South Pacific, to the east of Australia and north of New Zealand. The Hirsch family created the Normal Watch brand, registering a garter trademark in 1888. This type of watch is normally seen in small size, and then quite scarce, but the jumbo size is hardly ever seen. Unlike the smaller size, the large size has its Central Europe dial at 12 in higher position relative to the center; only the smaller round example appears in Sabrier and Rigot, "Ore d'Acciaio" (published as "Steel Watches" in English). EPW - Sam Macham, London (Samuel, ca 1700-1715), early English verge fusee, 58mm, sterling silver OF pair cases without hallmarks, bearing casemaker's incuse mark "HR" for either Henry Rawlins or Hugh Richards, ca 1710, outer case-back engraved with sunburst, KWKS, sterling silver champlevé dial signed "Macham London" with engraved gilt surround, poker & beetle hands, verge escapement, gilt mvt with oversize pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque smiling mask, inner case engraved "Moses Cleaveland 1794," s#773 with matching number stamped on both inner and outer cases, the latter with early Pittsfield Mass watch paper, maker unknown and barely legible, recording a repair in 1828. Priestley notes that this incuse mark is seen on cases from 1692 to 1721, and is on the earliest existing plate of casemakers' marks from 1682, held at the Goldsmith's Hall, but is either Henry Rawlins, born 1682, apprentice of Richard Blundell, freeman of the Clockmakers' Company in 1706, or Hugh Richards, born 1687, apprenticed to John Bayley, freeman in 1709. The Cleaveland family genealogies have been quite well established. The owner of this watch at the end of the 19th century is probably not of the whaling family of Martha's Vineyard, but can probably be traced to the Pittsfield area with some research. EPW - Viennese Renaissance-style enameled oval verge fusee watch of the mid-19th century, 42mm x 68mm to top of swivel bale, gilt metal body OF case purpose-fitted with late 18th century unsigned Continental verge fusee mvt, KWKS, basse-taille enameled dial in Renaissance period style, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled two-fitted balance bridge, without visible numbers. The case body is enameled inside and out in the classic Viennese style, the back with charming scene of merry dancing and drinking couple, the inside with minstrel playing lute, the dial of translucent enamels over simply chased or stippled fields such as the earliest Limoges enamels were, some sections in opaque enamel, the numerals revealed in champlevè plaques. The gilt metal bezel carries a carved rock crystal cabochon to act as the crystal. While Renaissance art and architecture was occasionally reflected in various ways through the subsequent centuries, its architecture was fully but not purely embraced by the mid 19th century, and in few places as energetically as in Vienna, where entire city blocks were rendered in the unique combination of Renaissance, Baroque and Mannerist styles. Art and jewels followed suit, with an entire genre of horological items created from older mechanisms, sometimes even recycling parts from actual period timepieces. For the most part we see late 17th century through 18th century components or mechanisms with dial and cases made in styles of the 16th and 17th centuries. The genre has its own unique flavor and execution, and is widely collected. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,600
