The Omega Speedmaster was chosen by NASA in 1965 after outperforming numerous other contenders in rigorous testing. They were first issued during the Gemini program using the older straight lug style 105.002. More Speedmasters were thereafter purchased, and starting with the Apollo program, astronauts were being issued this exact model 105.012 "NASA internal reference number 6126" with the new beefier case and integrated crown guards. They remain flight qualified by NASA to this day and accompany astronauts to the ISS regularly. Modern interpretations of this watch are still in production.
