DESCRIPTION: EPW - John Arnold & Son, London, gold fusee pocket chronometer with spring detent escapement and helical gold hairspring, 56mm, heavy 18K gold OF case bearing London hallmarks for 1825, "T H" marking in cameo for casemaker Thomas Hardy, cream colored enamel dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), spring detent escapement with exposed detent in channel of plate, OZ balance with helical gold hairspring, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with pierced and engraved balance cock, s#129/430 with matching serial number to dial and corresponding s#129 within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 103.2 dwt (160.5 g). We interpret the case of 1825 vintage with corresponding serial marking to the movement to be a purpose-made replacement presumably for a damaged or lost original, and we note that Thomas Hardy was a frequent casemaker among the Arnolds' pocket chronometer production. Comes as pictured with an unsigned fitted wooden box. Gross weight of assembled watch 29.9 dwt (46.6 g). A magnificent high grade small sized minute repeater; at 36mm diameter, this watch is in the realm of a typical smaller-sized pendant watch, and minute repeating pocket watches of this quality are quite scarce at this size. DESCRIPTION: EPW - Johann Spitznagel, Olmütz, very rare early self-winding watch with 4-year perpetual calendar retrograde day and date sectors, 53mm, silver OF case stamped inside "Carl Wagner," white enamel dial with sector to lower portion for retrograde day, sector to upper portion for retrograde date, self-winding and keyset (key not included with this lot), cylinder escapement, large gilt and steel self-winding weight located between plates, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled two-footed balance bridge, s#175. A fascinating early self-winding watch with self-winding mechanism designed to function when the watch is pendant-up and the watch is jostled in the vertical plane. A previous owner noted that this movement is equipped on its back plate with an anti-overwind mechanism and that the case is believed to be of slightly later vintage. This present piece was previously handled by us in Fall of 2023 and at that time was having significant issues with its calendar function, our current consignor had the watch serviced for this issue and it is substantially improved as noted in its present condition report.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, day and date advancing properly as hands set forward, retrograde reset is functioning but date hand has a bit of play in its fit which occasionally causes contact with hour hand and results in an incomplete reset which must then be coaxed along to its full reset position, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; dial with hl at 6 below day hand, some surface scrapes to areas above-right of center and below 1, few scattered very short surface scratches and tiny nicks elsewhere; fine hands, minute with finish loss; case shows little wear, a moderate patina, ding to band at 7; tight bow; good domed glass bull's-eye crystal with some glue excess at its seat.

Gross weight of assembled watch 66.9 dwt (104.0 g). This watch is highlighted by its exquisite case engraving which is in exceptional crisp condition. Interestingly it appears this engraving detail was applied to a previously fairly well-worn watch, as other surfaces of the case such as the pendant, bow, hinges, and cuvette show an incongruent significant amount of wear.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, with some prodding will often tick sluggishly with low balance amplitude for a while but stopping again before long, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, group of small punch marks to barrel bridge adjacent barrel arbor, some scratches and marring to main plate immediately around pillar positions, gilt plates with some haze and scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; dial with some hls; fine hands, hour and minute are blue colored, seconds-hand is a plum colored replacement, minute with oxide to tip, hour missing a small bit of its tip; case with incongruent wear to its surfaces as front, rear, and band have superb crisp engraving detail showing virtually no wear while the case pendant, bow, hinges, and cuvette show medium wear with reduced detail, we interpret this as indicating the case likely was carried for a number of years and at some point after reaching a medium wear level was brought to a skilled engraver who added the front, rear, and band detail and after this point the watch saw virtually no wear, case with no dents or dings, exquisite crisp engraving detail to front, rear, and band, case front lift spring not contacting to full 90 degree position allowing lid to tilt back a bit toward closed with gravity, case front and rear hinges with some play and are missing end-caps; tight bow thinned at top, push shows medium wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: EPW - Vacheron & Constantin (our attribution), signed as "Merimont Watch Co., Swiss," 44mm, heavy platinum OF original A.W.C.Co. case with rose gold initials to rear, refinished silvered dial with applied gold numerals, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, 18J, wheel satin nickel finish, s#3377868. The Merimont Watch Co. name was first registered in 1917 in Geneva, then registered under American Watch Case Co of New York in 1918, and finally registered under Vacheron & Constantin in 1928. An ad in the Jeweler's Circular of May 4, 1921, shows ladies' platinum and diamond bracelet watches, the cases made by American Watch Case Co, and the mvts by Merimont Watch Co, with the byline "Every Merimont Movement enshrines a century and a half of experience," a reference to the beginnings of Vacheron & Constantin in 1775. We believe the present movement's serial number represents a simple addition of a leading "3" digit as prefix to Vacheron & Constantin's typical serial sequence, and this is consistent with other Merimont Watch Co. marked watches we have encountered. From the collection of Ethan Lipsig.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, toning of plate surfaces, some scattered micro-fine scratches; refinished dial is cosmetically excellent with few mild surface marks and spots, some bend to right side of "V" portion of VII numeral, bend to bottom left of "X" of XII numeral; excellent hands; case shows light wear, short shallow crease type dent to upper-right of rear, few dings elsewhere to rear; tight bow, crown shows light wear; plastic crystal with numerous fine to micro-fine scratches.
