Hamilton, 36S, 21J, marine chronometer with lever escapement and 56-hour winding indicator, mounted in nickel-plated tub within a three-tier wooden box, lower box tier with Hamilton signature plaque, metal dial of approximately 2.4 inch diameter, KWKS (winding/setting key not present or included with this lot), fully capped lever escapement, bi-metallic compensation balance, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#1260629. The total production of the Hamilton 36 size was 970 made with all examples being produced in a single production run spanning serial numbers 1260001 to 1260970. From known examples it appears that the first 500 movements of this run were typically cased in silver for use as deck watches, while the final 470 movements of the run were as the present example in marine chronometer style within gimbaled nickeled tubs inside mahogany boxes. These pieces were sold between 1918 until at least as late as 1943.

Clock - Chelsea, World War 1 era 8-day aluminum aircraft clock for U.S. Army Aviation Section, Signal Corps (a predecessor to the modern day U.S. Air Force), 107mm round, 47mm thick, original aluminum case with three mounting holes, screw down bezel and winding/setting crown at 6, back stamped "C.C.Co 117, February 1918," metal dial originally black but has aged to an attractive "tropical" brown color, dial with a 3-6-9 layout and with subsidiary seconds at 12, s#116080 with matching serial number to case. The Aviation Section of the Signal Corps was founded in 1914 and was the second iteration of the United States version of an Air Force. They first saw action against Pancho Villa during the Mexican Expedition when Villa attacked Columbus, New Mexico. The entire squadron consisted of 8 Curtis JN-4 "Jenny's" at the time and only 11 pilots. With the entire Aviation Section only consisting of 44 active duty officers, this was soon to change with the breakout of World War 1 with the inevitable expansion that ended 33 years later in the formation of the United States Air Force. Truly a must-have piece for the early military collector or the Chelsea collector who just doesn't have "everything."
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; excellent-plus dial with discoloration and light surface spotting; fine hands with abrasions and just small areas of overpainting remaining; case shows very light wear, numerous dings and scrapes on bezel from years of possible use; crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

EPW - Wittnauer, Swiss, possible prototype of military Type 5742-1 chronograph with 30-minute register, 50.5mm, chrome-plated base metal OF original Wittnauer case with contract markings to rear, knurled edges to bezel and rear, metal dial, SW-SS, lever escapement, 18J, wheel satin nickel finish, s#358658 with matching serial number marked to case rear. A rare piece that is the only example of this type we have encountered by Wittnauer, we note that the rear of this watch's case is blank in the space following the "Contract No." marking. We interpret this as likely suggesting the present watch was a trial or prototype piece Wittnauer supplied to compete for the U.S. military's contract for the Type 5742-1 "Navigational Stop Watch" but to our knowledge no regular production from Wittnauer was ultimately contracted for this 5742-1 design. In contrast, a sizable production of the Type 5742-1 for U.S. military service was instead provided by Hamilton, Breitling, and Breitling-Wakmann. In all, a very intriguing and attractive piece for the military collector that wants something truly unusual in their collection.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good chronograph and minute register function, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered small micro-fine scratches and mild surface spots; dial with rectangular strip of what appears to be glue or shellac neatly over portion of signature area between "I" and "E" in "WITTNAUER," otherwise nearly flawless; excellent hands with some minor areas of paint loss and some small areas of paint touch-up; case shows virtually no wear, scattered fine scratches and abrasions to rear from handling, no dents or dings, superb contract marking detail, circular rear finish is fully intact; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.
