American Pocket Watches Part 1

Stock#: JH60417

DESCRIPTION: APW - Charles Fasoldt, Albany, NY, exceedingly rare two-train stop/start chronograph with upper chronograph register having co-axial seconds and minute recording as well as 1/5-second jump within a small sub-register of two-second interval, subsidiary timekeeping seconds-register at lower-left, and an additional subsidiary register displaying 24 hour time at lower-right, co-axial double wheel lever chronometer escapement, 18S, heavy 18K gold HC recase with professional quality purpose-made modifications to accommodate the unique needs of present watch, casemaker's "E.H" in cameo, gold cuvette, removable key within crown, button on band at 2 for stop/start chronograph function, slide on band at 4 for selection of winding the chronograph train, winding the timekeeping train, and for release of removable setting key secured within pendant, white enamel DS dial with chronograph register at top, subsidiary seconds-register at lower-left, and 24 hour timekeeping register at lower-right, SW-KS with additional setting arbor for reset of chronograph minute hand (removable key is contained within case pendant), co-axial chronometer lever escapement, rose gold Fasoldt patent regulator, rose gold jewel settings on both trains, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#503. Gross weight of assembled watch 108.2 dwt (168.3 g). An exceedingly rare complication from this notable independent American maker, per Michael Harrold's excellent "Charles Fasoldt, Horologist and Inventor" book it is believed that only approximately 6 examples of Fasoldt's two-train timer were produced. Harrold notes that serial numbers for this type begin at about 500, and that examples at serial number 500 and 504 were known to exist, as well as there being a record in Fasoldt's Albany ledger of the sale of an example at serial 505 to a doctor for $400. Our presently offered example at serial 503 therefore tucks neatly within this same known serial range. Our firm has previously handled this piece in 2012 when the movement was mounted in a miniature clock case and was lacking some of its stemwinding components, and in the years since it has been treated to an extraordinary professional quality restoration involving fabrication of its lacking components and pairing with the present purpose-modified 18K gold hunting case. Three pages of information from the restorer regarding the operation of this watch, the degree of its restoration, and an assessment of its winding design are included among our photos.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good stop/start chronograph, good 1/5-second jump function, good 24 hour timekeeping register function (this register displays time in tandem with timekeeping hands, and sets in tandem with the hands, and does not have a traditional winding indicator functionality despite its "Wind Up" marking), PLEASE NOTE that the operation of the winding functions and the setting function of this watch is relatively complicated involving specific operations of the crown and the case slide that must be performed in the correct manner as is displayed in our photo 9 of the page titled "The Manual," fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches and small surface spots, restoration of the watch included fabrication of the crown wheel bridge and one of the rose gold jewel settings over the chronograph train and these fabricated components have been matched very well in finish and condition to the remainder of the mvt, photos of the mvt prior to its restoration can be viewed at this link ... https://www.archive.jones-horan.com/?auction=All&searchfor=Fasoldt+s%23503&sort_by=date&show_thumbnails=true&limitnbr=250&Submit=Search; dial with small fractures and associated small surface flake above chronograph register at 12:30, minuscule nicks to rims of chronograph register hole and 24 hour timekeeping register hole, small affixing screws at 15 and 45 minute positions have been covered over in white fill material and small triangle minute hash markings have been added to these areas; excellent hands; case shows medium wear, some scattered nicks and mild dings, reduced engine turning detail with full loss through shoulders, front hinge is missing its end-caps, reverse of pendant has an evident gold plug where a stem detent screw would have once been located; tight bow, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.

Howard & Co, Boston, Series V, 15J, L-S (just under 15S), extraordinarily heavy 18K gold original HC marked for retailer Critzer Bros. of San Antonio, Texas, beautifully detailed enamel inlaid Masonic insignia within front and rear lids, front having black and red Knights Templar symbol and "In Hoc Signo Vinces" (Latin for "In this sign thou shalt conquer") marking, rear having a black keystone pendant marked with Royal Arch Mason acronym "H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S." (Hiram, Tyrian, Widow's Son, Sent to King Solomon), gold cuvette, glazed mvt observation cover, white enamel SS dial, umbrella style primary hands in combination with a very unusual set of red time-zone style hands set with minute hand approximately 40 minutes behind primary hand, SW-SS, nickel damascene, s#61559. Gross weight of assembled watch 147.8 dwt (229.9 g). Gross weight of case only with movement removed 113.3 dwt (176.2 g). A stunningly large and heavy gold cased Howard, this behemoth is not only by far the heaviest gold cased Howard we have had the pleasure to handle in our firm's history but is also the heaviest gold American case of any make we have handled. The case is of notably massive construction throughout with thick heavy lids and a broad band that measures a bit over 58mm diameter, and with the movement removed the case weight is in excess of six avoirdupois ounces weighing in at 6.22 avoirdupois ounces, or 5.67 troy ounces. The watch is made further interesting by its spectacular enamel inlaid Masonic imagery within its case and by its unusual time-zone hands. Watch comes as received with a leather pouch marked "Compliments of Oxford Hotel, Hearne, Texas." In all, a fantastic piece for either the Howard collector, the Masonic collector, the lover of gold ... or for a collector who loves any combination of the three!
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, some typical fine to micro-fine scratches, oxide to regulator assembly; dial with hl between 4 and 5, hl below seconds-register at 6:30, perimeter hl at 10, short scrape above seconds-register, tiny edge nick under bezel at 4:30; excellent primary hands, some oxide to umbrella and tip of minute, fine time-zone hands have been overpainted red and have some red paint losses, hour with mild bend; case originally with two front lift springs but one is broken and the remaining spring is insufficient to press the weight of the lid open so lid must be manually lifted, remaining lift spring does hold partially against gravity allowing opened lid to tilt only approximately one-quarter to one-third back toward closed, case shows very little wear, some scattered scratches and surface nicks, profuse micro-fine scratches, shallow ding to lower rear perimeter, inner lid Masonic details are superb with all enameling fully intact; tight bow, crown shows medium wear with ridge break; good glass crystals.

One of the most eye-catching and iconic of Ball Watch Co. rarities, the 19 jewel Ball Waltham with winding indicator is extremely rare and these were the only Ball pocket watches to have been produced with winding indicator function. DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, split-seconds chronograph, likely a unique prototype, at least 16J, 16S, heavy 14K gold OF original J&S (Jeannot & Shiebler) case, gold cuvette, white enamel SS dial with outer chapter in 1/5-second increments, SW-SS, nickel damascene, s#2888615. Gross weight of assembled watch 76.1 dwt (118.4 g). An exceedingly rare, if not unique, piece for the Elgin collector; we have encountered only a small handful of Elgin chronographs of any type, and among these we are only aware of a single other example with split-seconds function though of somewhat different overall design. Elgin chronographs we have encountered have all had differences from one another and appear to have been made on an experimental or prototype basis which apparently was never brought to scale production. This example uses a Grade 108 movement as its base and features a split-seconds chronograph design similar to what Waltham employed in this era, and the watch has a purpose-made factory dial which is visually similar to the style used among Elgin's "doctor's watch" production but differs in having a subsidiary seconds-register and also in the details of its combined minutes and chronograph chapter at perimeter.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good chronograph and split-seconds function apart from an occasional error of up to a second or two to hand reset position, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, some scattered small bits of oxide to steelwork, central split-seconds bridge with what appears to be a soldered repair of a fracture near its affixing screw; dial with small perimeter hls outside 1, some edge flakes between 12 and 2, perimeter hl outside 8; excellent hands, few small bits of oxide to sweep-seconds-hands; case shows light wear, few small dings to rear, ding to rear of band at 7; tight bow, crown shows medium wear with small ridge break; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Crescent St, Model 1892, 21J, 18S, 14K multicolor gold box hinge original Roy HC with a majestic yellow gold buck to rear within a frame of rose gold branches, front with initialed rose gold shield surrounded by multicolor floral detail and framed within a horseshoe, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to Mark L. Tatom 1907 by the boys of the Mexican Mine," white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, nickel damascene, s#7818528. Gross weight of assembled watch 97.9 dwt (152.2 g). A notably beautiful high grade presentation piece with an interesting Alaskan gold mining provenance. Mark Lindsey Tatom was born in Oregon in 1866 and later moved to Alaska where in 1901 he became foreman of the Mexican Mine which was a portion of the Treadwell gold mining complex on the south side of Douglas Island near Juneau, Alaska. At the time, the Treadwell gold mine was the largest hard rock gold mine in the world and Treadwell's gold mine extracted over three million ounces of gold between 1881 and 1922. Please see our photos with this lot for images of article entries in the September 4th, 1907 and the September 11th, 1907 issues of the "Douglas Island News" which announce Tatom's retirement and also the presentation of this "handsome gold watch" by the employees of the Mexican Mine.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, oxide spots to winding wheels and regulator; dial with small impact mark and associated surrounding tiny fractures at upper rim of seconds-register, outer chapter hls between 4 and 5, small hl below second-register at 6, fine scratch right of center; fair hands, minute with oxide to its mid-point and a bent tip, hour with finish loss to portions of its spade, seconds-hand with finish loss throughout; case shows hardly any wear, some abrasion to perimeter areas of boxed portion of band, ding to boxed portion of band at 8, excellent engraving detail, bezel with a loose fit having some excess play at its seating, case front must be given a bit of extra pressure at top when closing to secure on its latch; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, Veritas with winding indicator, very rare HC model mvt with conversion dial for OF display, Grade 274, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF original B&B (Bates & Bacon) case, white enamel DS dial with seconds-register at 3, indicator-register at 9, this orientation allowing the HC model mvt to display correctly in OF style case with 12 position at pendant, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, diamond endstone, ornate nickel damascene, s#10513914. A terrific piece for the Elgin collector; hunting case model movements with Up/Down wind indicator are extremely rare among American production. The actual number made is unknown but only a tiny fraction of Elgin's Grade 274 production was finished with winding indicator feature, and these are the only regular production hunting case model wind indicator movements to have been made by a major American maker. The present example features a scarce conversion style dial allowing the hunting case model movement to orient properly in an open face case. We have encountered several of these conversion dials for the Grade 274 wind indicator movement, and the existence of this special dial that was suitable only to this very rare watch strongly suggests that the concept of a hunting case wind indicator was not a commercial success for Elgin.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, bright lustrous surfaces, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, oxide to regulator assembly; dial with patched edge chip near 2, curved perimeter hl between 12:30 and 2, hls and small associated surface flakes between setting-lever and upper-right rim of seconds-register, small patched edge chip under bezel near 11; case shows very light wear, profuse micro-fine scratches to rear, ding to band at 8, some additional small dings or nicks elsewhere to band, no dents; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

HC with spring-loaded front and rear, selection of opening front or rear controlled by tilting bow away from desired side, glazed mvt observation cover, front with conversion style white enamel SS timekeeping dial with seconds-register at 9 which allows this OF model mvt to orient properly in a HC with pendant at 3, rear with white enamel chronograph chapter ring divided in 1/5-second increments, SW-LS, gilt mvt, s#1090671. Gross weight of assembled watch 90.3 dwt (140.5 g). A very nice original example of this scarce early Waltham chronograph type.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Empire City Watch Co, New York, Empire Combination Timer, 15J, 18S, silver original HC with attractive engine turning and engraving detail, white enamel SS dial marked with nineteen cities, New York City being below 12 and contains a "12" numeral, all other cities are marked with their local time relative to New York City's 12:00 time and are also marked with their distance in miles from New York City, KWKS (a key is included as pictured), Elson's patent double-index regulator, nickel damascene, s#52622. A very rare and eye-catching watch, the Empire Combination Timer was a product of the Empire City Watch Co. which was incorporated in early 1876 as a reorganization of the United States Watch Co and was the final short-lived attempt to make a success of the Marion watch factory. The Empire Combination Timer with its unique dial display demonstrating the time in various cities is perhaps the most iconic of the Empire City Watch Co. products, and its dial also provides a vivid demonstration of the complexities of travel between American cities in the years prior to the nationwide adoption of standard time in 1883.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered surface spots and fine to micro-fine scratches, mild oxide to regulator assembly and winding arbor escutcheon disk, winding arbor escutcheon with a mismatched replacement screw, escape wheel jewel setting with a mismatched screw having larger sized head, fourth wheel jewel setting with a mismatched screw of differing color, balance cock screw is a replacement with smaller sized head; dial with numerous parallel scratches at perimeter between 10 and 12, beveling wear around entirety of perimeter outside minute chapter, hl below seconds-register at 6; fine hands, minute with oxide to its spade and tip, hour with mild oxide to spade; case shows little wear, an attractive moderate patina, some dings to lower portion of front, some mild dings to rear with few corresponding dings to cuvette, good engine turning and engraving detail; tight bow, push shows light wear; good glass crystal.

Howard & Co. dials with this similar additional hand placement at the 7:30 position demonstrating the escapement action.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good "wag" hand function, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, gilt plates with uneven tone and some ultra-fine scratch striations likely caused by past wiping, surface spot near third wheel jewel, mvt with a case screw position to right of "Boston" marking which is currently lacking a screw but case rim does have a corresponding witness mark indicating it once held a screw; flawless dial; nearly mint hands, tiny bend to tip of minute; case shows ample wear, two dents just right of center rear, short crease type dent at right edge of rear, only the slightest small bits of faint engine turning detail remain at perimeter adjacent pendant and thumbcatch, case front opens a small bit wide of 90 degrees (to approximately 100 degrees); tight bow, replacement push shows little wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Rockford, 11-15J, 18S, heavy 14K gold false box hinge drum style Waltham HC with beautiful engraving detail including an idyllic lakeside house and sailboat scene to rear, front shield with initial, gold cuvette engraved "Thomas P. Leonard from Mother, Christmas 1887," "Hess & Culbertson, St. Louis, MO" marked white enamel DS dial, transitional style SW-LS with retained KW arbor, nickel damascene, s#164634. Gross weight of assembled watch 96.3 dwt (149.8 g). A notably beautiful gold boxed hunting case with superb engraving detail. This case does show additional case screw marks from having at one time having held another movement, but interestingly the present movement has been lightly scribed with the name "Leonard" which matches to the 1887 case inscription. For this reason we suspect this watch has likely held this movement since its original point of sale in 1887, and that perhaps the additional case screw marks were from another movement that was briefly considered for pairing with this case prior to its sale with the Rockford movement.

DESCRIPTION: APW - New York Watch Co, Springfield, very low serial #119 to mvt and case, 19J, 18S, silver OF J. Watson, N.Y. case with eagle hallmark, snap on bezel, white enamel DS dial, KWKS (a key is included with this lot as pictured), fully capped lever escapement, wolf's tooth winding, s#119 with matching serial number within case. The "Springfield" was New York Watch Co.'s initial product and known examples extend to serial numbers a bit past 1000. These watches are typically stem-wind with the high majority being stem-set and a smaller portion being keyset. The present example is atypical for being of keywind and keyset form, and a partial disassembly reveals that this movement was machined in the typical manner for stemwind and setting function but given the case of this example having matching serial number and correct form we interpret that this watch was either finished as-seen in its present atypical form lacking some of its SW/SS components and with this case being its original or was converted to this form during the earliest portion of its existence with this case having been purpose-made to suit it.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, upper plates with some scattered spots and fine to micro-fine scratches, dial plate with some scratches around dial pin position near escape wheel, larger winding wheel is missing a tooth but winding function is unaffected, smaller winding wheel with some pitting and evident polishing of its surface, regulator with some oxide; dial with scattered outer chapter hls and fractures, hls within seconds-register, small chip at center of seconds-register, small edge nick under bezel at 6:30; excellent hands, some finish loss to spade of minute, mild bend to tip of minute; case shows little wear, an attractive acquired patina, cuvette with many fine to micro-fine scratches from past key slips, some dings to lower rear perimeter, mild ding above-right of center rear which is more evident to inner surface of lid, scattered small nicks to band, good engine turning detail with some reduction at shoulder; tight bow; thick glass crystal with scattered scratches.
