Ephemera - E. Howard & Co. business card, measures approximately 3.5 inches x 2.25 inches. A very attractive early piece of ephemera for the Howard collector; this card is marked as "Manufacturers of Fine Clocks and Watches Successors to Howard & Davis and the Boston Watch Co," and we believe the reference to these two entities suggests a likely dating to the late 1850s for this piece. The handwritten correction for the office address from 109 Washington St. to 17 Washington St. may also be a potential clue to dating, and a quick online search reveals Howard's use of the 17 Washington St. address as early as 1859 (in an advertisement in the "Practical Mechanic" periodical).

Antique - Stephenson, Howard and Davis of Boston antique balance with two scale plates, turned and tapered brass shaft sitting on a square brass base, removable brass balance beam, scale measures 20 inches tall x 23 inches wide including scale plates, scale require 3.8 grams in its current condition to level the plates, included with the scale is a paper label from the commonwealth of Massachusetts stating that it passed testing and including an earlier lead seal from the Department of Weights and Measurement of Massachusetts, a wonderful piece for either restoration or to be displayed in its current condition, truly a must have collectible for the early American watch collector with such close ties to two of the founding fathers of American horology.

Hamilton, pocket watch carrying case, leather exterior marked in gold foil with "The Hamilton Watch The Railroad Timekeeper of America" to its upper lid and with "Hamilton Watch" to its front, case measures approximately 11 inches x 6.5 inches x 2.5 inches. A scarce and attractive piece for the Hamilton collector, these were identified in Hamilton factory literature as ""Leather Salesman Sample Case for 16 Watches." The present example has an excellent exterior, but its interior has been altered during its lifetime as it would have originally contained a lower compartment designed to hold eight watches, a removable upper tray designed to hold eight watches, and a silk lid liner marked "The Hamilton Watch The Railroad Timekeeper of America."

Box in excellent exterior condition overall showing little wear, some scratches, abrasions and relatively minor areas of surface loss with the most notable being at upper right side of upper lid and at left side of rear over lower portion of hinge, front latches with good function but left side latch hardware with abrasion and chrome finish loss to its upper-left portion; interior of box has been substantially altered as described above and presently has a lower portion with holding slots of unknown purpose, would benefit greatly from a loving restoration to something closer to its original interior design.
