APW - Illinois, Bunn Special, Grade 161B, extremely rare, 21J 60 Hour Elinvar, 16S, gold-filled OF original Star Watch Co. Model 118 case, Montgomery white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with white Elinvar hairspring, friction fit gold jewel settings, interrupted ray pattern nickel damascene, s#5610590. An excellent example of this extremely rare watch, the 161B is considered by many Illinois collectors to be the most desirable piece among the entire Bunn Special series. Total production is believed to be only 50 made, with all known examples falling neatly within the 5610551 to 5610600 serial range. The 161B holds the distinctions of being the final development of the Illinois Bunn Special and of being the final production run of railroad watches made under the Illinois name. The design of the 161B movement differs from all other Bunn Specials in its use of friction fit jewel settings, and in this regard the 161B is directly related to the "B" series Hamilton Grades 992B and 950B. A terrific opportunity for the Bunn Special collector; over the past 20 years we are aware of only four examples of the 161B to appear at public auction.

APW - J.P. Stevens Watch Co, Atlanta, GA, 11-15J, 16S, heavy 18K gold box hinge drum style OF original J.P. Stevens & Co. case with spring-loaded hunting style front and rear with desired lid opened by tilting bow to opposite side and depressing crown, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to W.C. Morrill from his friend Joseph E. Brown," unusual "skylight" style white enamel dial with smaller central display matched in size to case front aperture, Arabic numerals in radial orientation, unusual fancy gilt and blued hands, SW-LS, crosshatch pattern nickel damascene, mvt with Stevens' patent spiral regulator in frosted rose gold, gold jewel settings, s#10. Gross weight of assembled watch 95.5 dwt (148.5 g). An impressive example from this rare maker. In the mid-1880s, J.P. Stevens produced 169 watches of his own manufacture using material and tooling that was obtained in 1882 from Ezra F. Bowman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This example is notable for its particular low serial number and also for its very unusual complimentary case and dial configuration. The inscription to its case cuvette adds a further bit of Atlanta, GA historical charm; as William C. Morrill and Joseph E. Brown were respectively the Treasurer/Secretary and the President of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, a 138 mile line which ran between Atlanta, George and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Ticking somewhat sluggishly, overhaul recommended, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, long fine scratch across main plate running right of s#, additional lesser fine scratches elsewhere, scattered tiny surface spots, some dings at edge of main plate below "Atlanta;" dial with hls through visible portion, more significant fractures visible when case front is opened, patched edge chip at 8:30, patched flake outside minute chapter at 5; excellent hands; case shows very little wear, few small nicks, no dents, excellent engraving detail, gold soldered repair evident inside front lid at seating of inner bezel, some file marks at setting lever area; tight bow, crown shows medium wear with ridge break; good glass crystal.

APW - Edward Howard, by Howard Keystone, 23J with distinctive blue sapphire jeweling, free-sprung balance with special fine adjustment weights mounted on balance spars, 16S, heavy 18K gold original Howard case with "Captain B.J. Mullaney from Officers and Crew of U.S.S. Mullany, DD528, Sept. 1944" engraved to rear, Jurgensen-style lips, gold cuvette with ornate signature ring and matching mvt s#, "Edward Howard" marked white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, free-sprung balance with gold and platinum timing weights, frosted tear-shaped cap settings on balance and escape wheel, wolf's tooth winding with frosted and mirror finish wheels, frosted gilt mvt, s#66 with matching serial number engraved to case cuvette. Gross weight of assembled watch 68.6 dwt (106.7 g). Introduced in 1912 and priced at the lofty sum of $350 retail, the "Edward Howard" was E. Howard Watch Co.'s flagship product and made a conspicuous entry into the elite market niche. In total it is believed that approximately 300 examples (if not a bit less) of the Edward Howard were produced, and examples we have encountered have spanned serial numbers ranging from the mid 2-digit range up to the low 300s. The present example is an excellent original specimen, and features a very appealing military provenance for U.S. Navy Captain Baron Joseph Mullaney. Mullaney was Lieutenant Commander of the Fletcher-class destroyer ship U.S.S. Mullany from April 23rd, 1943 to September 19th, 1944; with this end date of command corresponding to the presentation engraving of the present watch. Following this command, Mullaney was to go on to command the destroyer U.S.S. Hugh W. Hadley during 1945 and Mullaney was awarded a Navy Cross for his heroism and service during a harrowing battle on May 11th in the Ryukyu Islands during which the ship was badly damaged by kamikaze aircraft which necessitated its towing to Anchorage for emergency repair. The movement of the present watch has two interesting features we believe worthy of mention. The first is that the movement attaches to the case via tabs under the case bezel, with no case screws or provision for case screws seen from the back side of the movement. This arrangement appears to be found among only some of the low serial numbered Edward Howard examples, as we have observed serial number 62 to be of this same style, but serial number 82 and all examples we have seen at higher serial numbers than this have had the more common (and in this cataloger's opinion, somewhat less visually elegant) design with case screws accessible from the rear. The other interesting movement feature of this example we'd like to note is that upon dis-assembly, this movement has no assembly serial numbers; but instead is marked with a single letter "P" to its main plate, barrel bridge, winding bridge, center bridge, fourth wheel bridge, escape wheel bridge, pallet bridge, balance cock, balance wheel spar, ratchet wheel, barrel, barrel cover, and even to its barrel arbor.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, micro-fine scratches to balance cock, some micro-fine scratches and bits of oxide to portions of winding wheels and click assembly; virtually flawless dial with only a minuscule fine scratch in the upper portion of the seconds-register; excellent hands; case shows little wear, mild dent to band at 4, dings to band at 3 and 6, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows light to medium wear with small ridge break; good glass crystal.

APW - G.P. Reed, Boston, 15J, with 54-hour winding indicator, mvt marked for retailer Currier & L'Heureux, 45mm, heavy 18K gold drum style "F M" OF recase with spring-loaded rear, initials to rear shield, glazed observation cuvette, bow with chain guards, white enamel DS dial with seconds-register at 3, winding indicator-register at 9, SW-shift-locking-LS, lever escapement with small moustache style counterpoise, nickel damascene, s#254. Gross weight of assembled watch 92.3 dwt (143.6 g). A rare and attractive example of this independent maker's work, based on known examples it is believed that G.P. Reed produced somewhere between 350 and 400 watches in total. Reed's production is notable among American horology for including a number of watches with interesting complications such as winding indicator display, spring detent escapements, and calendar watches.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces with some mild micro-fine scratches; dial with hl between center and winding indicator-register, very faint hl between center and seconds-register, group of very small fractures bordering left side of seconds-register, infinitesimal pinpoint flake bordering right side of winding indicator-register, very small flaking around center hole of seconds-register, seconds-register has evidently been re-secured with some glue seepage evident around its seat; excellent hands, minute with bit of oxide to its spade, winding indicator-hand with some finish loss; case appears to be an extremely well executed recasing as evidenced by a small indexing notch in the interior or the band (not corresponding to anything with the present mvt, but of the type seen among some European production of the era) and by some filing evident at the setting lever position, case shows hardly any wear, few nicks to band, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning and engraving detail, glazed observation cuvette appears to be a well executed replacement of an original traditional style cuvette with some gold solder evident at the seating of bezel portion to segment at hinge; tight bow, crown shows light wear; glass crystal with some small scratches and very small edge nicks.

APW - Ball Howard, B of LE Standard (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers), 17J, Series VIII, N-S (just over 19S), heavy 14K gold OF case with HWW (Hayden W. Wheeler) retailer marking, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to J.H. Moore by employees of N.Y.L.E. & W. Elmira, N.Y., April 1st 1894," case was originally with glazed observation mvt cover which is no longer present, white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, spiral pattern nickel damascene, s#307436. Gross weight of assembled watch 88.2 dwt (137.1 g). A rare watch, total production of the Ball Howard open face is believed to be 190 made with this total divided among 120 made that were marked as "B of LE Standard" and 70 made that were marked "O of RC Standard." The case inscription of this example is for Joseph Haywood Moore in recognition of his service as General Foreman of the New York, Lake Erie & Western Railroad (N.Y.L.E. & W.) shops in Elmira, New York, and a May, 1894 issue of the "National Car & Locomotive Builder" periodical notes Moore's transfer from this post to an appointment as Master Mechanic of the N.Y.L.E. & W. shops in Buffalo, New York. Although the case of this example does not have Ball signature as is the typical and desired norm among gold cased Ball Howard production; we do find the present case intriguing as it is model-specific to Howard Series VIII production showing no sign of having held another movement, as the cuvette inscription date coincides neatly with Ball Howard production (which spanned April, 1893 to July, 1896), and as the presentation is to a prominent railroading figure of the time. Whether one interprets these factors to allow a possibility of this case's originality to this movement will depend on how rigidly one holds the belief that Ball Howard production must have come exclusively in Ball marked casing, as opposed to if one believes there is the possibility that presentation pieces could have been cased in styles other than the Ball marked norm.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running after a sluggish start, overhaul recommended, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, main plate with profuse scratching at perimeter outside "Ball & Co. Cleveland." marking, scattered fine scratches and fine scratches elsewhere to main plate, balance cock with sizable area of abrasion through space between index engraving and stepped portion where regulator seats, numerous pinpoint pecks to perimeter portion of balance cock, marring to top of third wheel jewel setting, balance jewel setting with mismatched screws, center jewel setting with a mismatched screw; nearly flawless dial with fine scratch at perimeter between 12 and 1, few small fine scratches within seconds-register, small paint loss to the "o" of "Ball & Co." marking; fine hands, hour and minute of differing blue shade, seconds-hand with oxide; case shows medium wear, very mild soft ding to upper rear, engine turning detail fully lost throughout rear shoulder; tight brassy gold-filled replacement bow, crown shows ample wear; glass crystal with scratch left of center.

An extremely rare top grade watch, we believe the total production of this 26 jewel "Benjamin Franklin" to be only approximately 25 to 30 made. In total we believe that Illinois produced 270 of their 26 jewel movements with the Benjamin Franklin being the rarest of these by a wide margin and with the other two 26 jewel variants being marked "Bunn Special" (we believe approximately 90 to 110 made) and "Pennsylvania Special" (we believe approximately 135 to 150 made).

APW - Waltham, split-minutes and split-seconds chronograph, exceedingly rare, at least 17J, 14S, heavy 18K gold original A.W.Co. HC with initials at front center, small Jurgensen-style lips, glazed observation cuvette, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, fishscale pattern nickel damascene, s#1833063. Gross weight of assembled watch 94.0 dwt (146.2 g). An exceedingly rare Waltham complication, this is the only example of this type of split-minutes chronograph design we have ever encountered. This watch features both a stacked pair of minute hands and a stacked pair of split-seconds hands, and when the case button at 2 is depressed the lower minute hand is stopped in its position while the upper hand continues to run and the pair of split-seconds hands are activated. Depressing the button at 4 activates the split-seconds hand initiation and reset. A second depress of the button at 2 will stop all chronograph functions, and the third depress of the button at 2 resets the chronograph with the split-seconds hands returning to 12 and with the lower minute hand moving to its position below the upper minute hand. This minute hand arrangement thus serves the same recording function as would be more typically performed by a minute register, though the arrangement of the present piece has notable practical disadvantages that the user must manually calculate the difference in time of the minute hands when the chronograph function is stopped and that the upper minute hand continues to travel with its timekeeping function so the interval between hands will continue to grow as the watch continues running. Given this practical disadvantage relative to a traditional minute register design, we suspect this piece likely represents an earlier but very short-lived effort by Waltham to design a minute recording function for their chronograph line. Given its exceeding rarity, and its striking visual effect with five hands stacked at dial's center, this is a superb piece for an advanced Waltham collection.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good chronograph, split-seconds and split-minute functions aside from an occasional tendency of the split function hands to reset slightly out of index, button on case at 2 must be pushed fully and very firmly to initiate chronograph functions and reset, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered micro-fine scratches to plates, some mild bits of oxide to areas of steelwork; visible portion of dial with light hl at 7, light perimeter hls between 1 and 3, some scratches and surface nicks around center; nearly mint hands; case shows light wear, mild ding to right perimeter of front, mild dent to band at 7, scattered dings and nicks elsewhere to band, few mild dings to perimeter of rear, engine turning detail reduced at front and rear shoulders with some small areas of full loss to front shoulder, case front hinge with a bit of play and front lift spring is weak needing assistance opening lid and allowing lid to tilt approximately half-way toward closed with gravity; tight bow thinned slightly at top, crown shows light wear; good glass crystals.

APW - Waltham, Samuel Curtis, serial #916, 15J, 17S, unmarked coin silver HC, cuvette engraved "American Lever Sold by A.M. Ward. Hartford, Conn.," white enamel dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#916. A historically important early watch, the Samuel Curtis was produced by Waltham's predecessor the Boston Watch Co. and in total approximately 900 were made with serial numbers ranging between about 100 and 1000. This particular example is notable for its unusual case signature for retailer A.M. Ward of 194 Main St, Hartford, Connecticut, who was a frequent advertiser during the mid-1850s in the "Hartford Courant" periodical.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, some discoloration and spotting at perimeter of main plate to area around end of "Curtis" marking, some additional lesser surface spots elsewhere, some scratches with the most notable being between the case screw position and the fourth wheel jewel setting, some raised circular marks to barrel bridge surface around barrel arbor; dial with light hl at 4:30, hl from 9:30 to center, some small perimeter fractures at 9:30; excellent hands, minute with oxide to tip; case has a small mar to its inner rear lip around the mid-point between the hairspring stud and the "S" marking of the regulator index but we believe this case likely is the original to this watch and that this small mar is likely from a cause other than being a case screw witness mark from another movement, the reason we believe this is due to the non-standard sizing of the Curtis movement, the presence of only a single locator pin hole which is correctly matched to the present mvt, and due to the appropriate vintage of the retailer's case signature to the present mvt, case shows ample wear, some scattered dings and nicks, rear hinge has some play and tips open and closed loosely with gravity; tight bow, push shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
