DESCRIPTION: Hamilton, rare Model M-21 marine chronometer with 24-hour dial, fusee-drive with spring detent escapement, 56-hour power reserve winding indicator, original gimbaled brass tub within brass-mounted and banded inner mahogany box with gilt Hamilton signature plate, outer mahogany box with plastic Hamilton signature plate, leather strap, black metal 24-hour dial of approximately 4 inch diameter marked "Hamilton U.S.A.," "Model M-21" within a capsule-shaped recess and "3E014" within its seconds-register, KWKS, fully capped spring detent escapement, 14J, mono-metallic free-sprung balance with helical Elinvar hairspring, mvt marked "Model 21," satin nickel finish, s#2E12483. This very rare piece was made by Hamilton in the 1950s and features the same 24-hour dial arrangement as was used in the 1940s by Hamilton among a small production of 24-hour dial "Model 121" chronometers. The dial of the present example differs from the Model 121 dial in that its seconds-register has a white ring interior to the seconds numerals, whereas the Model 121 dial does not. A number of these dials with inner seconds-register ring were produced in the 1940s intended for the Model 121 and these were marked with US Army Air Force markings and serialized with the 3E sequence of the Model 121 production, but this dial style was rejected by the Air Force in favor of the version without inner seconds-register ring. In the 1950s a small number of these "rejected" dials in Hamilton's inventory were then utilized as seen on the present example for the production of 24-hour dial chronometers with Model 21 movements, and these 1950s vintage 24-hour chronometers with Model 21 movements are known to collectors as "second series" machines as opposed to the 1940s vintage Model 121 which are considered the "first series," are marked "Model 121" on their movements, and of which only 42 were made. The dial of the present example, with its "Model M-21" marking in a milled recess in place of where the dial would have initially been marked "U.S. Army Air Force," is consistent with at least two other known pieces which share this same style 24-hour marking with milled "Model M-21" marking and likewise have movement serial numbers in the 2E1248x range and dial serial numbers in the 3E01x range. Please see our attached photos for images of the Hamilton factory timing records of the present piece noting its serial number of 2E12483, the presence of "24 hour dial," and listing of "Geotechnical Corp" as the entity being tested for. These Hamilton timing card records for this chronometer were provided courtesy of Larry Crutsinger of https://www.hamiltonparts.com. Thank you, Larry! From the Estate of Michael "Skip" Marrone.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered fine scratches; dial with some areas of oxide and finish loss within and around the recessed “Model M-21” marking, some spots of finish loss in this area have been recolored with ink, few mild fine scratches elsewhere to dial, some typical perimeter wear under bezel; excellent hands; near mint brass tub and gimbals, good beveled glass crystal; inner box in near mint cosmetic condition overall, few scratches, upper half currently opening/closing freely without resistance as it is lacking its locking key and latch function is unknown; outer box in excellent cosmetic condition overall, small unevenness of front left junction of top and sides to upper portion of box with small overhang at side, some scratches with high majority being to upper portion, leather strap intact and shows ample wear.

DESCRIPTION: John Fletcher, 148 Leadenhall St, London, spring detent marine chronometer with Airy's compensation arm and 56-hour winding indicator, mounted in gimbaled brass tub within three-tier mahogany box, signature plaques to front, silvered dial of approximately 4 inch diameter signed "John Fletcher maker to the admiralty 148 Leadenhall St, London 2698 with Airy's compensation arm" as well as with British military pheon (broad arrow) within seconds-register, KWKS, fully capped spring detent escapement, jeweled click pinion, 11-12J, bi-metallic balance with Airy's compensation and helical hairspring, mvt marked with pheon, s#2698 with matching serial number within tub and on plaque to lower front of box. This particular piece was used for the cover image of Konrad Knirim's "British Military Timepieces" book and a copy of this book is included with the present lot. Airy's compensation bar was originally, and for a period of time, at the Admiralty's insistence, added to the balance system to allow symmetrical adjustment for temperature compensation without changing the balance poise; the bar was frictioned onto the staff above the spar, and pressed two opposite spring mounted weights against the rim, which bar could be easily turned to change position and rate, most useful in extreme environments. The Admiralty abandoned its requirement after a short time, and the usefulness of the device was replaced with other options. A notable historical fact from English chronometry is that Thomas Mercer, founder of Mercer chronometers, was an apprentice to John Fletcher from 1854 to 1858 which may well have been while the present piece was produced. Selections from the collection of Tom McIntyre. Mr. McIntyre's website contains stories on many of the watches which can be found here: https://awco.org?collid=300.

DESCRIPTION: EPW - C.H. Meylan, Brassus, fine gold watch with presentation to historically significant U.S. Naval aviator, mvt and dial marked for retailer Marcus & Co., New York, 46mm, 18K gold OF case with "J.R." initials to rear, hidden rear hinge, gold cuvette engraved "Adventure of the Crew of PN.9.1. Presented to Commander John Rodgers, U.S.N. by The Associated Press as a souvenir of enrollment as a member of the staff September 11, 1925," silvered dial with applied gold numerals, SW-SS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, 19J, fausses-côtes pattern nickel damascene, s#32137. Gross weight of assembled watch 44.3 dwt (68.9 g). Commander John Rodgers is a notable figure in U.S. Naval history, and in 1911 Rodgers became just the second man to quality as a U.S. Naval aviator. On August 31st, 1925, Rodgers led the first attempt at non-stop flight between San Francisco and Honolulu which was a daunting task at that time in terms of both aviation technology and aerial navigation. This endeavor was unsuccessful as Rodgers' plane ran out of fuel approximately 25 hours after takeoff and the plane was forced down at sea. A large scale Naval search in the following days proved unsuccessful as the plane had lost radio function, and it was feared that all were lost to sea. Undaunted though, Rodgers and crew ripped fabric from the wings of the planes and from this material created sails to continue on for Hawaii. After nine days and over 400 miles of successful navigation of the downed aircraft at sea, Rodgers' plane was sighted on September 10th by the crew of submarine R-4 approximately 15 miles off the shore of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, and the plane was towed to shore with great rejoicing. On September 11th while aboard the U.S.S. MacDonough, Rogers wrote and submitted a detailed account of his adventure to The Associated Press and this story was published in newspapers throughout the Western hemisphere. In recognition of this superbly written account, the present watch was awarded by The Associated Press to Rodgers in February of 1926. This presentation, along with the simultaneous presentation of a similar gold watch to Captain George Fried who wrote an account of his January, 1926 rescue of the crew of British steamship Antinoe, marked the first instance of this Associated Press award being bestowed on laymen outside the news industry. Among our images with this lot please observe reproduced articles from the September 12th, 1925 edition of the "Hawaii Tribune Herald" and the February 6th, 1926 edition of "The Orlando Sentinel" which respectively are Commander Rodgers' first person account of the event and a description of the awarding of the present watch. This lot is further accompanied by some additional literature regarding Rodgers and the events of the PN.9.1 flight.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, few small fine to micro-fine scratches; nearly flawless dial, visible portion with few micro-fine scratches and minuscule surface marks, some more profuse surface marks at perimeter under bezel; nearly mint hands, minuscule speck of oxide at tip of minute; inner rim of case rear has a semi-circular mark near present mvt's case screw position but we question whether this is indeed a sign of recasing, case shows hardly any wear, tarnish to bezel, few fine scratches and more profuse micro-fine scratches, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal.

Examples such as the present that are lacking winding indicator are believed to have had replacement "service" dials added early in their working history; as the winding indicator mechanism of these pieces was prone to malfunction and as replacement parts for this mechanism were not readily available it was determined more expedient to simply re-dial the pieces without winding indicator function rather than to attempt repair of this function.
