Godfrey was a watchmaker located at 24 Second Street of Brooklyn, New York at the time this watch was made, and this lot is accompanied by assorted paperwork with information regarding Godfrey including 1850 census listing, Brooklyn city directory information, and a copy of Godfrey's 1895 death certificate. From the collection of Charles B. Wallace.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, inconsistent calendar function, currently day and moonphase hands are advancing when hands are set forward but the month and date are not, correcting lever at 10 currently not functioning, on a recent previous trial all functions advanced properly when tested via either the correcting lever or setting of the hands forward, unknown to us if this piece was originally designed with full perpetual function or if designed with non-leap year annual correction only, overhaul needed for calendar function, provision to mvt and case for a small lever at 5 but no components currently in this position and no obvious purpose is apparent for anything needed at this position, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, upper plate with few fine and micro-fine scratches, pillar plate with a patch of abrasion visible adjacent the barrel, some fine scratches, inspection of under-dial mechanism reveals some evident past repairs including replacement of a tooth on the minute wheel; dial with scattered hls, small patched edge chip at 5, underside of dial with some areas of filing through to copper base; excellent hands apart from hour which is missing one portion of its fleur-de-lis detail; case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystals.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, Serial #3, Stuart, 18S, 15J, gold-filled JAB&Co HC recase, "Springfield Watch Co" marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, gilt mvt, s#3. A tremendous piece for the Illinois Watch Co. collector, we are pleased to offer this truly rare opportunity to own a low single digit serial number. The "Stuart" grade was Illinois' finest early product and was named for John T. Stuart who was one of the Illinois Watch Co.'s founding directors and its first president. The lowest serial numbered production of the Illinois Watch Co. was blocked in 100 watch runs of five different grades that were named for factory directors or department foremen, with the initial 100 serial numbers being of Stuart grade movements. The present example was formerly of the collection of the late Bill Meggers, author of the 1985 "Illinois Watch Co., Encyclopedia and Price Guide," and this watch is pictured on page 95 of this book.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, good gilt tone, some small scratches around case screw position, fine scratch toward right side of barrel bridge, mvt has been disassembled for inspection and has correctly matched serial number 3 to all plates, balance wheel is known to be a replacement as Bill Meggers acquired this watch in the early 1980s with all serial numbered components present with the exception of the balance wheel which was missing and watch was restored at that time with a balance wheel with scribed "3" digit added to the underside of its spar (arm); dial with some faint hls, two scratches within lower portion of seconds-register; excellent hands; case shows little wear, small nick on band at 12, good overall engraving and engine turning detail with reduction primarily at shoulders; tight bow, push shows light wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Illinois, Bunn Special, Grade 161B, extremely rare 21J 60 Hour Elinvar, 16S, rolled gold-plate OF Star Watch Co. case, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, mono-metallic balance with white Elinvar hairspring, friction fit gold jewel settings, gold train, interrupted ray pattern nickel damascene, s#5610599. An extremely rare watch, the 161B is considered by many Illinois collectors to be the most desirable piece among the Bunn Special series. Total production is believed to be only 50 made, with all known examples falling neatly within the 5610551 to 5610600 serial range which makes the present example likely the second to last made. The 161B holds the distinction of being the final development of the Illinois Bunn Special and of also being the final production run of railroad watches made under the Illinois name. The design of the 161B movement differs from all other Bunn Specials in its use of friction fit jewel settings, and in this regard the 161B is directly related to the "B" series Hamilton Grades 992B and 950B. A terrific opportunity for the Bunn Special collector, this is only the third appearance of a 161B at public auction within the last 20 years of which are aware.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, small scratches around the escape jewel setting, plates otherwise with scattered fine to micro-fine scratches with balance cock having a greater profusion, larger winding wheel with fine to micro-fine scratches, pallet bridge with fine scratch striations likely from sanding; virtually flawless dial with only a minuscule pinpoint perimeter nick within lower right of seconds-register; nearly mint hands; case with extra lever slot at 11, case shows little wear, few scattered pinpricks on rear, no dents or dings; bow with slightly brass underside pivots freely, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Crystal Plate serial #9, 17J, 4S, gold-plated OF display case, white enamel dial without seconds-register, lever escapement, free-sprung balance, jeweled barrel arbor, gold train, gilt pillar and cock screws, back plate and balance cock constructed from polished transparent rock crystal, quilted pattern gilt damascene dial plate, s#9. A beautiful and notably early example of one of the most iconic watches in American horology, the Waltham Crystal Plate movements have a strikingly unique appearance with red ruby jewels friction set into transparent plates giving the illusion of their floating in mid-air. In total it is believed that approximately 75 examples of the 4 size crystal plate movement were produced. The present example with single digit serial number is notable for having a rarer early style of plate arrangement with a smaller sized main plate held by two pillars, this design believed to have been used for only the first 20 or less examples made before the design was changed to a larger sized main plate held by three pillars for the remainder of 4 size Crystal Plate production. For further information regarding Waltham's Crystal Plate watches we recommend the April 2003 NAWCC Bulletin article titled "Waltham's Crystal Plates" by Gerrit A. Nijssen and Carl B. Goetz.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, main crystal plate nearly pristine with only a small flake or finish imperfection to its underside adjacent one of the pillars, crystal balance cock superb with few minuscule flakes adjacent the hairspring stud screw, gilt dial plate with superb color and luster; virtually flawless dial with only infinitesimally small edge nick under bezel at 5; near mint hands; case shows virtually no wear, no dents or dings; bow pivots semi-freely, crown shows virtually no wear; good glass crystals though front with one very small edge nick.

An attractive original example of top grade movement, this American Watch Co. grade Model 1868 is also quite rare with the NAWCC online Waltham database returning a total production of 152 made. This particular example is further notable for its serial number and Fogg's patent marking in an attractive wavy three-line arrangement, this example being the only one we have encountered with this marking style as all others we have observed have serial number and Fogg's patent marking in a much plainer straight two-line arrangement. The individual the case was signed for, Major Benjamin Perley Poore, served Company A of the 8th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War and in civilian life was a well known newspaper correspondent and author. DESCRIPTION: Mvt only - G.P. Reed, Boston with 45-hour winding indicator, 15J, 45.9mm dial plate diameter, "G.P. Reed, Pat. Dec. 21 1869" marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, lever escapement with moustache counterpoise, gold jewel settings, Reed's micrometer regulator, nickel damascene, s#142. A rare and attractive example of this independent maker's work, based on known examples it is believed that G.P. Reed produced somewhere between 350 and 400 watches in total. Reed's production was notable for including a number of watches with interesting features such as winding indicator function, spring detent escapement, and calendar watches. Among the most innovative minds in American horology, George P. Reed held 28 U.S. patents for watch and clock related developments and these were granted over a 34 year period. The patent marking of the present piece with Dec 21, 1869 date refers to patent D3804 which is for the plate design of this watch. For excellent further information on George P. Reed, we recommend Gerrit A. Nijssen's February 2005 "George P. Reed and Hiram W. Smith: Two of Greater Boston’s Individual Watchmakers" NAWCC bulletin article.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good wind indicator function, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, few mild micro-fine scratches to plates, main plate with some ultra-fine scratch striations likely from a past wiping, some scattered small bits of oxide to steelwork; dial with two faint hls near 2, two small faint hls above seconds-register, faint hl near 4, minuscule edge nick at 1:30, minuscule edge scuff near 9:30; nearly mint hands.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, American Watch Co, Model 1872, 21J, 16S, 14K gold AWCo HC with attractive engraving and engine turning detail, front shield with initial, gold cuvette with 1886 presentation, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, gold disk around balance jewel setting, nickel damascene, s#999995. Gross weight of assembled watch 78.1 dwt (121.4 g). Movement is marked "Woerd's Pat. Compensating Balance" and comes from a production run spanning serial numbers 999901 to 1000000 from which several examples are known with Woerd's sawtooth style balance wheel. The present example though, like the majority of examples we see from this run, does not have the sawtooth balance but rather has a high grade bi-metallic balance wheel of the more traditional form. The underside of its balance wheel spar (arm) is scribed with "95" correctly corresponding to the last two digits of the movement serial number. We believe this movement, like many from its production run, may have begun its existence with a sawtooth balance but was ultimately revised at the Waltham factory with a traditional high grade balance wheel.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, winding tension releases immediately when crown is let go of during winding suggesting a likely click and/or click spring issue, if crown is advanced without being allowed to release mainspring power the balance will tick weakly, setting lever must be held out to engage setting mechanism, overhaul needed, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, small circular arrow marking scribed on plate surface around steel colored screw on main plate between larger winding wheel and balance cock, plates with some mild ultra-fine scratch striations likely from a past wiping, some bits of oxide to winding wheels; dial with light blue hl at 11:30, minuscule edge nick under bezel at 3:30; excellent hands; case lift spring is opening lid but is not contacting lid at proper position and is therefore allowing lid to tilt back somewhat with gravity, case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, engine turning and engraving detail with only mild reduction, rear hinge is missing an end-cap; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystal.

Gross weight of assembled watch 86.2 dwt (134.0 g). This watch exhibits Waltham's earlier five-minute repeater design which was based on Georges Aubert's August 23rd, 1887 U.S. patent #368904. Selections from the collection of Tom McIntyre. Mr. McIntyre's website contains stories on many of the watches which can be found here: https://awco.org?collid=300

DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 72, 16S, very heavy 14K gold original HC, front and rear with distinctive raised lip demarcating attractively engraved perimeter from engine turned central portion, band with a distinctive angular contour with sharp edge around its midpoint, gold cuvette, white glass-enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, gold train wheels, gold balance screws, attractive nickel damascene, s#607339. Comes with an associated wooden fitted Elgin marked box. Gross weight of assembled watch 90.5 dwt (140.8 g). A beautiful example of Elgin's top quality watch in a spectacular heavy gold case. A single run of 1000 serial numbers spanning 607001 to 608000 was blocked for Grade 72 production but based on known examples we believe the actual production was only approximately 450 made, as all examples we have observed have fallen neatly within only the 607001 to 607450 portion of this run. This indicates the likelihood that a bit over half of the blocked serial number range was never completed.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, short scratches toward left side of train bridge with small area of surrounding surface rub, small surface spot between escape wheel jewel setting and fourth wheel jewel setting, few small bits of oxide to central polished steel setting wheel; dial with outer chapter hl along edge near 2, light outer chapter hl at 7, light hl above seconds-register; fine hands, hour and minute are plum colored, seconds-hand is blue; case shows hardly any wear, no dents or dings, superb engraving and engine turning detail; tight bow, crown shows hardly any wear; good glass crystal. DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 91, three finger bridge mvt, 16S, heavy 14K gold recase with spring-loaded front was presumably originally a HC that has since been modified with cut-out of front lid and insertion of crystal, gold cuvette, correct white glass-enamel DS dial that friction fits to mvt via a canister style ring, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, nickel damascene, s#942002. Gross weight of assembled watch 77.2 dwt (120.2 g). A single run of 1000 serial numbers spanning 942001 to 943000 was blocked for Grade 91 production, but based on known examples we believe the actual production was only approximately 350 made as all examples we have observed have fallen neatly within only the 942001 to 942350 portion of this run indicating the likelihood that nearly two-thirds of the blocked serial number range were never completed. This particular example is notable for its extremely early placement within the production run, being just the second Grade 91 made by serial number. Selections from the collection of Tom McIntyre. DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, Veritas with winding indicator, very rare HC model mvt with conversion dial for OF display, Grade 274, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase, white enamel DS dial with seconds-register at 3, indicator-register at 9, this orientation allowing the HC model mvt to display correctly in OF style case with 12 position at pendant, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, diamond endstone, ornate nickel damascene, s#10854380. Hunting case model movements with Up/Down wind indicator are extremely rare among American production. The actual number made is unknown but only a tiny fraction of Elgin's Grade 274 production was finished with winding indicator feature, and these are the only regular production hunting case model wind indicator movements to have been made by a major American maker. The present example features a scarce conversion style dial allowing the hunting case model movement to orient properly in an open face case. We have encountered several of these conversion dials for the Grade 274 wind indicator movement, and the existence of this special dial that was suitable only to this very rare watch strongly suggests that the concept of a hunting case wind indicator was not a commercial success for Elgin.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some typical fine to micro-fine scratches, some oxide to winding wheels, escape wheel jewel setting with one of its screws missing a portion of its head; dial with small chipping to center of indicator-register, some hls within indicator-register, faint hl at 8; nearly mint hands; case shows medium to ample wear, ding or small gouge to band at 10, substantially reduced engraving detail, thin strips of wear to brass to portions of band; tight brassy bow, crown shows medium wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, mvt signature appears possibly to be "A.B. McClurr, Revere, Mass.," pocket chronometer with spring detent escapement, approximately 14J, 16S, 18K gold OF ET&Co HC recase, gold cuvette, "American Watch Co" marked white enamel SS dial, KWKS, spring detent escapement, frosted nickel finish, no visible mvt s#, s#1228 within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 75.0 dwt (116.6 g). Please note there is uncertainty to our identification of the last name in this movement's signature due to the ambiguity of some of its Old English font lettering. This very intriguing movement is based on Waltham's Model 1860 design with the notable differences of escapement type and upper plate shape, and is similar to several other spring detent movements based on Waltham design we have handled in recent years. The most similar of these was sold in our galleries in 2016 and was signed "T.J. Pressey" on its movement, and two others were sold in 2017 with signatures of "Franklin C. Adams" and "C.P. Babcock." Photos of each of these can be viewed with a search of our archive records and make for very interesting comparison with the present example.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, present case not allowing clearance for balance weights and will require some modification for balance clearance if it is to be retained with this mvt, when tested uncased mvt is fully wound and will tick for a few moments after a twist but with inconsistency and some evident error to escapement function, overhaul needed, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scratches and fine scratches adjacent detent foot, typical scattered fine to micro-fine scratches elsewhere; dial with small faint hl near 5, seconds-register appears likely re-pasted; excellent hands; minute with slight bend; case shows medium wear, no dents or dings, reduced engraving detail, greatly reduced engine turning detail with significant portions of full loss, rear hinge with darkened brass end caps; replacement bow of somewhat different color pivots semi-freely and is thinned at top, push is a white metal replacement; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 72, 16S, heavy 14K gold (confirmed via test as marking is worn) original HC with monogram "J R" initials to front and 1891 monogram date to rear, gold cuvette with "Presented to James Rix by the Employees of the Blast Furnaces, Illinois Steel Co. Joilet Works, Nov. 23rd, 1891," white enamel DS dial that friction fits to mvt via a canister style ring, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, gold train wheels, gold balance screws, quilted pattern nickel damascene, s#607313. Gross weight of assembled watch 80.1 dwt (124.6 g). A very attractive example of Elgin's top quality watch, currently in need of an overhaul and some attention to its case.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly and stopping occasionally, case is missing its stem but mvt winds and sets properly when uncased, overhaul needed, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, few mild micro-fine scratches, few specks of oxide to steelwork; dial with small hl above seconds-register, short fine scratch left of center, few minuscule flakes to rim of seconds-register hole; fine hands with some portions of finish loss; case with missing stem and broken front lift spring, stem affixing screw is not present in case pendant, small bit of side-to-side play to front hinge and cuvette, case shows almost no wear, no dents or dings, superb engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

Wheeler Co. of New York City, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to Arthur Reese. May 28th, 1911 by Members of B. of L.E. Div. No 652 for Valuable Services Rendered," case rear with corresponding fancy "A R" initials, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#775967. Watch comes also with its original Hamilton hang tag bearing serial number correctly matched to the movement. Gross weight of assembled watch 71.6 dwt (111.5 g). An elegant and beautiful example of this top grade watch with a documented railroading provenance. Arthur Reese of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania worked from 1888 to 1933 for the Philadelphia and Reading Railway and during this 45-year employment held positions including brakeman, fireman, conductor and locomotive engineer. The present watch was given to Arthur Reese by his fellow Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers members in recognition for his services as a member of the brotherhood's "Grievance Committee," and the presentation of the watch is described in detail in the May 31st, 1911 issue of the Pottsville Republican newspaper. Please see our images for a copy of this 1911 article as well as a copy of a photo of Arthur Reese which is found in the July, 1910 issue of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers' Monthly Journal. DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 940 with rare "Adjusted For Railroad Service 21 Jewels" marking on mvt and dial, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase with attractive oncoming train image engraving to rear, Montgomery white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, two-tone checkerboard pattern gilt and nickel damascene, gilt screws and regulator assembly, s#985012. A very rare watch, the 18 size Grade 940 "Adjusted For Railroad Service 21 Jewels" watches is far harder to find than its 16 size Grade 992 equivalent. This 18 size version with two-tone checkerboard damascene was advertised in 1913/1914 by George H. Tucker of Chicago, Illinois who was an official watch inspector for numerous railroads. Like other known examples of this watch, the present movement has a secondary number (8932 in this instance) lightly scratched on the plate surface adjacent to the factory serial number. From the Estate of Michael "Skip" Marrone.

Gross weight of assembled watch 57.9 dwt (90.0 g). A very rare watch in its lever-set version, all examples of the lever-set Grade 351 Lord Elgin that we have encountered have fallen within the 15159001 to 15159050 serial number range suggesting the possibility of a total actual production as low as 50 made. Gross weight of assembled watch 63.0 dwt (97.9 g). A superb example of this scarce to rare top grade watch, it is believed that the total production of the Lord Elgin Grade 351 is approximately 550 made. Though Elgin blocked 2000 serial numbers in total for the production of this grade it appears that only a fraction of these serial ranges were completed as all examples we have observed fall within either an initial group of 500 stem-set movements (serials 12718001-12718500) or a later group of 50 lever-set movements (serials 15159001-15159050). DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, "For Special RR Service" marked mvt, Grade 940 with two-tone damascene, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF original case, "Hamilton, Adjusted for Special RR Service, 21 Jewels" marked Montgomery white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, gilt screws, two-tone gilt and nickel damascene, s#663032. A rare and desirable railroad marking, this "For Special RR Service" is from a run of 75 consecutive serial numbers (663001-663075) that are listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as "Special Finish" movements that were sold to J.W. Forsinger of Chicago, Illinois between January and June of 1910.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, winds somewhat stiffly, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, two-tone finish remains attractive but with some reduction in color and luster, missing one main plate screw, one plate screw and both case screws are mismatched replacements, plates with few short scratches and some typical micro-fine scratches, few small surface spots; excellent dial though with a very faint shadow of a former owner's name evident in the glaze above the seconds-register which is visible at certain lighting angles and is presumably the remains of a name that was once painted on the dial surface and was later cleaned away leaving only this faint hint remaining to surface glaze, dial also with a short scratch near edge at 12:30 which is largely under bezel; fair hands, minute with significant oxide, others with lesser oxide; case shows substantial wear, dents to rear, small ding to band at 4, band and pendant are substantially worn to brass, bezel and rear with additional portions of wear to brass; tight nickel replacement bow, crown shows substantial wear; glass crystal with small edge flake.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 950B with very rare gold case, 23J, 16S, heavy 14K gold OF Hamilton Model 2 bar-over-crown case, initials on rear, "Hamilton 23 Jewels Railway Special" marked melamine DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, mono-metallic balance with Elinvar hairspring, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#24335. Gross weight of assembled watch 69.1 dwt (107.5 g). This Model 2 case in 14K gold version is very rare as Hamilton's pricing of this style limited its sales to a small handful of wealthy customers; in the September, 1950 Hamilton price list, the 14K gold version of the 950B is illustrated at $320 while the gold-filled version of the 950B is illustrated at $100. Please note that the present example does have a serial number mismatch between its band and its other case components, but as all case components are proper 14K gold Model 2 material the tremendous difficulty of sourcing these rare components separately suggests the strong possibility that this numbering mismatch is an original factory assembly error as opposed to a later marriage. From the Estate of Michael "Skip" Marrone.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overal, few small micro-fine scratches; dial with some scattered fine surface splits and some scattered fine scratches, some perimeter rub under bezel; near mint hands; case band with differing serial number to other case components, s#X0163 marked on band, s#J300892 marked within rear and corresponding "0" (marked as upside down "V") and 892 marking in Roman numerals scribed within case bezel, we suspect this serial number mismatch is possibly the result of an original factory assembly error rather than a marriage of case components at later time as there would be tremendous difficulty in sourcing these proper 14K gold components and as the initials engraved on case rear align appropriately (our photo demonstrates the end position of case rear threading to ordinary hand snugness, but if some added pressure is given with a more vigorous hand turn or with a rubber case grip the end position can be made to perfect vertical alignment), case shows very little wear, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; good thick glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Ball Elgin, Official RR Standard, Grade 330, 21J, 18S, gold-filled HC recase, scarce marginal minute style white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, bull'e-eye pattern nickel damascene, s#11959041. An extremely rare watch that is by a wide margin the most elusive of Ball Elgin grades, the hunting case 21 jewel Ball Elgin is believed to be far rarer than the Elgin production records would suggest. Though Elgin blocked a run of 1000 serial numbers (11959001 to 11960000) for their Grade 330 production, the very small handful of examples of this watch which we have encountered have all had serial numbers within the first 50 digits of this run (11959001 to 11959050) and we believe its very likely the actual production of the Grade 330 was indeed in this approximate range of only about 50 made. In total Elgin made four different grades of Official RR Standard for Ball and identified these as the 329 (17J HC), 330 (21J HC), 333 (17J OF), and 334 (21J OF) in factory records but interestingly, and somewhat confusingly for modern collectors, each of these movements regardless of grade carries a "333" marking as is seen on the present example.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, numerous scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, two small spots to main plate surface between s# and jewel count marking, some oxide to steelwork, one mismatched barrel bridge screw and one mismatched case screw; flawless dial; fine hands, hour and seconds-hand are plum colored, minute is blue; case shows medium wear, mild dent to band at 12, shallow compression type dents of center rear, some dings and nicks to band, reduced engraving and engine turning detail; bow pivots semi-freely, crown shows light wear; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Rockford, early Model 5 with very rare 24-hour dial and Muckle reversible case, 11-15J, 18S, HC model mvt in coin silver reversible style (cabriolet) recase by Rockford Watch Case Co. with E.A. Muckle's patent rotating inner ring design that allows for display in either HC or OF style, attractive engine turning and engraving detail, white enamel SS dial, transitional style SW-LS with retained KW arbor, gilt mvt, s#35086. A notably early Model 5 movement with spectacular 24-hour dial; we have handled other 24-hour early Rockford dials with similarly staggered odd and even numeral chapters but this is the first example we have encountered with red hash marks at the even hour positions and this small touch of color adds substantially to the striking appearance of the dial. Rockford's Model 5 production appears to have begun at serial number 35001, making the present example the 86th made by serial number.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running when wound by key but stemwinding mechanism is not functioning and makes a notable clicking sound when briefly tested, setting lever currently not shifting to engage setting function, hour and minute hand motion is correctly geared to 24-hour dial display, overhaul needed to address winding and setting functions, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, strong gilt color with few small spots of haze to plates, green oil smear to steel winding arbor escutcheon seen in photo has since been wiped cleanly away; excellent dial with hl below seconds-register at 13 hours, light hl at perimeter near 20 hours, seconds-register possibly re-pasted with subtly evident unevenness of fill material to its junction with main dial body; fine hands, hour with some bends and areas of oxide; case lever-set slot has been enlarged to accomodate the sliding style setting lever of the present mvt, case shows medium wear with reduced engraving and engine turning detail to all surfaces that are exposed when in open face orientation, lid which is only exposed when in hunting case orientation shows hardly any wear with crisp engraving and engine turning detail, these differential in wear patterns indicates that this watch spent virtually all of its working life being carried as an open face style, case shows no dents or dings, good reversing function; tight bow, replacement crown shows hardly any wear; thick glass crystal with few small surface scratches.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, unusual Model 1857 with ornately engraved balance cock and barrel bridge, marked "Charles M. Fisher, No. 1859," 16J, 18S, coin silver OF recase, white enamel DS dial with evidence of signature removal, KWKS, gilt mvt, marked "No. 1859" as date rather than s#, partial disassembly reveals underside of balance cock and barrel bridge are not marked with s# while the dial plate is marked with two-digit s#63. A very interesting and attractive custom made early Model 1857 movement with its eye-catching fancy barrel bridge engraving. This movement's features of an early style split bi-metallic balance wheel and its 16th jewel on the center pinion under the dial are also found among some early Appleton Tracy & Co. grade production and are consistent with a production date of 1859. We have not uncovered any info on who Charles M. Fisher was and if he may have had a connection with the American Watch Co., but this would certainly be worthy of further research.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, few fine scratches, some small surface spots and mild bits of clouding in small areas; dial center section with evident polishing marks where a signature was likely removed, dial with scattered hls, dial segments have been re-glued; excellent hands, hour with some bend; case shows ample wear, scratches to cuvette around key hole, shallow dents to rear and cuvette, largely reduced engraving detail; tight replacement bow; good glass crystal.

DESCRIPTION: APW - Ball Hamilton, "The Webb C. Ball Co, Cleveland O." signed mvt and dial, Grade 999F, 16J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, multi-patterned nickel damascene with striped pattern main plate and fishscale pattern barrel bridge, s#90152. An extremely rare Ball variant, we have only seen a very small handful of examples (no more than 3 or 4 with the present piece included) of this movement type. This watch is from a short production run of 16 jewel movements that are more often seen marked "Railroad Watch Co." on their barrel bridge and with matching damascene throughout, but apparently a very small portion of this run was paired with this alternative barrel bridge having fishscale damascene and "The Webb C. Ball Co." marking. This example is fully consistent with the very few others of its type we have seen, and interestingly the underside of the barrel bridges we have encountered for this variant are not marked with serial number suggesting the possibility that the movements were originally finished with typical Railroad Watch Co. marked barrel bridges before Ball made the decision to substitute the present style barrel bridge on a handful of examples of watches from this run.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, balance is gummy, overhaul needed, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered short fine scratches to plates, oxide to regulator, balance jewel setting screws are larger sized replacements; dial has few scattered faint hls and fine surface scratches, three edge chips under bezel with two near 9 and one near setting lever; fine hands; case shows ample wear, some dents to rear, largely reduced engraving detail, areas of wear to brass; tight brassy bow, crown shows substantial wear; good glass crystal with some glue excess around its seat.
