DESCRIPTION: SPECIAL SHIPPING NOTE at end of description - Clock - French, Louis XV, musical figural clock striking the quarter-hours on a pair of nested bells, and playing on the hour one of 7 tunes on flute/organ movement in base (with restorations), in red tortoiseshell with ormolu accents, figures of Zeus as a disguised bull being draped in flowers by a seated Europa as well as a lady's attendant and cupid kneeling on a cloud, enamel dial with black Roman hour markers and Arabic minutes, the unsigned movement of round construction with silk thread suspension, and with quarter snail and rack assembly on the rear plate, music is currently played on 14 sheet metal flutes, actuated by a wooden pin drum, driven by a chain fusee mechanism, which turns the drum and powers the bellows in the base. Base of clock to top Europa's head measures 35 inches x 21 inches at the clock's widest point, circa 1750. Gilt ormolu figures are attributed to Jean Joseph de Saint Germain. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, the music movement is perhaps later (early 19th Century), and may replace a musical bell box of Swiss or French origin, organ assembly is held in place with hex nuts and machine screws of a later type that would not have appeared in 1750, shown in photos; dial shows numerous hairlines and several perimeter chips; excellent hands; case has several light cracks as well as areas where the wood has expanded and contracted over time, light discoloration to some bronze work. Gribelin, Paris, with rear plate signed Poiret, Beaumont, Boulle tall clock with original pedestal, in red tortoiseshell with brass inlay and ormolu mounts, ormolu statue of Father Time crowning the top, dial with enamel plaques bearing black Roman numerals on gilt repoussé dial plate. 8-Day time and strike with an Aneroid barometer, well-made factory movement with heavy rectangular plates, Brocot escapement, base of pedestal to top of Father Time measures 81 inches x 24 inches at its widest point, ca 1870s. The Boulle work and gilt mounts on this case are exceptional and the clock is stunning in appearance, especially with the statue of Father Time crowning the top, most likely made by a later descendant of the famous Nicolas Gribelin who made clocks in the 1700s. DESCRIPTION: SPECIAL SHIPPING NOTE at end of description - Clock - Isaac Thuret, Paris, Louis XIV, Religieuse French mantel clock of classic period proportions, exhibiting the finest inlaid Boulle work of fretted brass, pewter, and shell, ormolu case accents, spring mvt strikes the hours on a bell and has rectangular plates, base of clock to top finial measures 23 1/2 inches x 12 3/4 inches wide on its widest point and 5 1/2 inches deep, circa late 17th century to the early 18th century, with repair inscription dated 1710 on the dial plate. Isaac was one of the first French clock makers to utilize the pendulum. He attained a royal warrant and had his workshop in the Louvre in Paris. His son Jacques was also appointed clockmaker to Louis XIV of France in 1694. As a result of working in the Louvre (a hotbed for truly superb craftsman) there was a fair amount of overlap among specialists. The renowned André Charles Boulle, who by most is considered to be one of the finest cabinet makers and preeminent artists in the field of marquetry, was known to collaborate with the Thurets on numerous occasions.
