American Pocket Watches

Lot#: 383

DESCRIPTION: APW - Adams & Perry, mvt signed "Lancaster Watch, Penna," 20J, 19S, heavy 18K gold original drum style HC with attractive engine turning and engraving detail, rear including small lakeside scene, gold cuvette, white enamel SS canister style (snap on) dial, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, nickel damascene, s#2036. Gross weight of assembled watch 95.3 dwt (148.2 g). A rare high grade early watch. Based on observed examples it appears the total production of the Adams & Perry model movement was approximately 1000 watches and among this total, those having nickel damascene such as the present example are far scarcer than those with gilt finish. This example is notable also for the presence of its original gold case, as the majority of observed examples tend to be either recased or without case. CONDITION: Mvt: Running after a twist to start, frequent slippage when winding as the visible wolf's tooth winding wheel exhibits significant wear to a number of its teeth, tendency to overbank as safety roller is glued to balance staff in wrong position, overhaul recommended...

DESCRIPTION: APW - Ball Hamilton with rare DeLong escapement, Official RR Standard, Grade 999N, 23J, 16S, green gold-filled OF Ball Model stirrup bow recase with ornate pattern back engraving, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, fully capped DeLong escapement with D-shaped upright pallets extending downward below the plane of the lever, jeweled barrel arbor, bull's-eye pattern nickel damascene, s#B606764. Charles E. DeLong's escapement designs were granted U.S. patent numbers 1192812 and 1327226 on July 25, 1916 and January 6, 1920 respectively. The DeLong escapement was added to a small number of Hamilton, Illinois, and Ball Hamilton railroad grade movements of this era. These watches initially performed admirably with functional advantages of an increased escapement draw angle and a reduced recoil, but the DeLong escapement never gained widespread use as its benefits were offset by a potential for performance impairment following servicing due to this escapement's greater sensitivity to slight changes in the depthing of the escapement hole jewels. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...

DESCRIPTION: APW - Ball Howard, marked "Trademark B of LE Standard" on mvt, Series VIII, 17J, N-S (just over 19S), very heavy 14K gold OF EH&Co case with gold cuvette, "E. Howard & Co, Boston" signed white enamel SS dial with distinctive Moorhouse-style decorative elements, SW-SS, spiral pattern nickel damascene, s#307479. Gross weight of assembled watch 92.4 dwt (143.8 g). A rare watch, it is believed that in total there were 190 of the open face Ball Howard movements marked for either the B of LE (Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers) or the O of RC (Order of Railway Conductors) with the division among this total being 120 with B of LE markings and 70 with O of RC markings. The dial of this example carries Howard factory markings rather than the typically expected matched Ball and B of LE markings found among most examples of this movement, and though this dial has some distinctive characteristics of Josiah Moorhouse's work an inspection of the dial's reverse showed that it carries no signature of any kind. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO after a sluggish start...
