DESCRIPTION:
APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#151, barrel plate from the 51st watch produced, assembly #61 under cock and repeated under dial, the motion wheels each bearing matching assembly #61, indicating a single different source for the rest of the mechanism, early series I, model 1858-A (Geller system), N-S (just over 19S), slightly later coin silver HC with ET silver cuvette (perhaps original to the watch bearing assembly #61), incuse old English script maker's marks "WGB," KWKS, WE-SSD with arched two-line signature, lever escapement with upright pallets, 15J, gilt mvt. Our recent accumulated serial and assembly numbers for model 1858 in the lower numbers are s#111-(#11), s#137-(#37), s#151-(#61, unrelated to the barrel plate), s#175-(#17), s#209-(#34), s#234-(#59), s#404-(54), s#453-(#93), s#490-(#40) and s#518-(#68). The present example has the columns for maintaining power assembly between the plates, but the assembly is lacking. Gross weight of assembled watch 78.0 dwt (121.2 g). Fortunately, through advance advertising of our listings, we get to hear from collectors who know the history of certain items. In this case, a friend of the company bought the barrel plate many years ago and sold it to a friend, who was able to put it together with other parts. Looking at the assembly number, one fails to see any pattern consistent with such assembly number for #151. Our thanks as always to those who bring these buried stories to life!
CONDITION:
Mvt: NR, some restoration issues to deal with, none insurmountable; the between-dial maintaining power assembly is absent; the center wheel is loose on its pinion, and must be staked back on to allow any winding; the escapement ticks a bit with pressure on the third wheel, but then seems to hang up; the male side of the motion work is missing, while one original matching screw holding the motion work cover in place will not go in all the way; the setting cup is missing from its virgule mount; one case screw is missing; fine mvt condition overall, plate tarnish, some light oxide; dial has T-hl to right of signature, seconds dial rotated and affixed with pitch; hands excellent original polished spade; case shows substantial wear, many MFS, light dents to front center, back with very sharp edge dent going into band, no dings, ET detail almost all gone, button and shield remaining; bow loose and thinned; good glass crystal.

APW - Hamilton and O'Hara, grade 992 with rare Borresen-DeLong center seconds, 16S, 14K gold OF HB&B recase with signature ring and owner's name on gold cuvette, SW-SS, signed O'Hara WED with central sunken outer minutes and seconds chapter, outer Roman numeral hour chapter, fully capped lever escapement, 21J, GJS, banded interlocking pattern NI damascene, s#886911. The center seconds arrangement of this watch (as well as the following two lots) is based on elements of designs patented by Helge A Borresen. The few known 16S Hamilton watches with this center-seconds arrangement (we are aware of three intact examples with the two in the present sale included in this count) are believed to have been modifications executed by Charles E DeLong. This example is from a run of grade 992 movements made in 1912 per the Gelson list of Hamilton production and was presumably modified by DeLong sometime shortly thereafter. DeLong had an earlier association with Borresen during the short lived McIntyre Watch Co venture of 1909 to 1911 for which DeLong was the primary designer and master watchmaker, and in 1914 DeLong created a model of his own manufacture of the Borresen center seconds watch. The hand arrangements of these Borresen designs were meant to reduce the likelihood of the hands interfering with one another. This example has its sweep seconds hand located beneath the minute and hour hands; the seconds hand rides on its own cannon pinion which can be installed together through the dial-hole, requiring a drag-spring for smooth carry which the cannon falls in next to nicely. Gross weight of assembled watch 60.1 dwt (93.4 g).

This example is from a run of grade 992 movements made in 1914 per the Gelson list of Hamilton production and was presumably modified by DeLong sometime shortly thereafter. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#747, the 647th watch produced, assembly #97 throughout, series I, model 1858-A (Geller system), N-S (just over 19S), coin silver unaltered and ideally fitting "JPC" stamped recased HC with American eagle and other letter hallmarks, ET silver cuvette, the locator pin position change on the mvt, KWKS, WE-SSD with two-line script signature, lever escapement no longer with upright pallets, maintaining power spring between the plates, 15J, gilt mvt. Gross weight of assembled watch 92.0 dwt (143.0 g). Our recent accumulated serial and assembly numbers for model 1858 in the lower numbers are s#111-(#11), s#137-(#37), s#175-(#17), s#209-(#34), s#234-(#59), s#404-(54), s#453-(#93), s#490-(#40) and s#518-(#68). All these prior numbers have the identical under-dial layout with two plate holes for under-dial version of the retaining power spring seen only in s#175 and s#209, with all other locator holes clean and screw-holes threaded. However, s#747-(#97) and s#706 no longer have the plate holes for any under-dial retaining spring option, implying a difference in plate preparation starting at s#651 with possible assembly #01. The escapement on this example appears to have been changed over to having the pallet in the same plane as the escape wheel, the older banking pin positions now empty, the new adjustable banking pin position by the tail, and the pallet bushing jewels changed from original. Another symptom of recasing was the case screw with clever washer that goes down over the plate to touch the seat, as the screw itself would not accomplish that, leaving play in the case.
CONDITION:
Mvt: GRO, excellent mvt condition overall were it not for the alterations, as noted above, with the abandoned banking holes and the bushed pallet bushing jewel stuck into the plate; dial with crack starting at top of seconds and continuing through center to 1; hands near mint but later; case shows medium smooth wear, many MFS, one dent to back edge by the band, no other dings, ET detail gone entirely with only a button remaining in back - the detail must have been ultra-light to begin with, band detail worn smooth in places; bow pivots with limited free range, replaced push shows very light wear; good glass crystal.

APW - Hamilton, grade 940 Special, 18S, GF OF original case with unusual combination of hinged front and threaded rear, SW-LS, WE-DSD, fully capped lever escapement, 21J, full gilt damascene finish, s#516624. Fully gilt damascene plate finish is extremely unusual for Hamilton, and the pattern of this example's damascene differs notably from what is found on the more typical 2-tone gilt & NI damascened 940 Specials that we have observed. This example is from a group of 25 consecutive numbered grade 940 movements, serials 516601 to 516625, that are listed in the Hamilton factory ledger as sold to the Geo B Barrett Co of Pittsburgh, Pa in fall of 1906.

APW - International Watch Company, scarce 20J Jones caliber "H" grade, (this famous Swiss firm was founded by former E Howard engineer F A Jones with American equipment set up in Switzerland, hence the American attribution), plates and dial marked "Sam Hammond & Co, New York" and "Elson's Patent Sept 15, 1868," 17S dial diameter, 16S case opening, HC mvt housed creatively in GP dollar-watch case, SW-push-locking-LS, WE-SSD also marked with serial number, fully capped lever escapement, GJS, fausses-cotes pattern NI damascene, s#1831. The present watch mvt is the earliest example we have seen yet of the top grade produced, having sold s#14297 in 2013. Jones & Kidder started factory set-up in 1869, Kidder left in 1872 to work for Cornell, and Jones remained until factory completion in 1875, when the company was taken over in bankruptcy. Some 5000 Jones caliber mvts were completed by common estimation. Elson's Patent refers to a mainspring attachment, according to McIntyre at AWCo.org. APW - Waltham, P S Bartlett model 1857 with rare and possibly unique application of Lamb's Patent ratchet, 18S, coin silver original Am Watch Co HC with ET silver cuvette and embossed eagle trademark, KWKS, WED with tall Roman numerals, lever escapement with gold balance, 11J, gilt mvt pattern NI damascene, s#42176. The hand-written Waltham serial number ledger shows this mvt being completed in November 1862 as part of a run with gold balance wheels. The ratchet mechanism is a type not previously documented, having a round steel puck that floats into a recess cut into the pillar plate; its travel is limited by a fine steel spring. The flattened puck functions by wedging itself between large lenticular cuts in the ratchet wheel and the cutout in the pillar plate. The bridge covering the ratchet assembly is engraved "Lamb's Patent." One can feel the smoothing effect of this design when winding the watch. We know of no other example.
