403. APW - Ball Hamilton, "Ball's Standard Railroad
Watch Co, Cleveland O" signed dial and mvt, made for Webb C Ball &
Co in April 1896 and listed in the Hamilton ledgers as grade 999E, but
with Hamilton regulator and matching serial number on balance cock,
18S, GP OF recase, SW-LS, restored WE-DSD, lever escapement, 16-17J,
bull's-eye pattern NI damascene, s#20584. Considered a two-star watch
in the Complete Guide, but others consider it even more rare. Some of
these do not have the "Ball's Standard" inclusion, and the 999E
classification, under which this would be type 1, is presumed to have
Ball regulator.

409. APW - Elgin, G M Wheeler, 18S, very heavy coin
silver Muckle patent original cabriolet case, converting from hunting
to open face, Northwestern stamp along with "RI" logo in shield,
presumably Rockford, Illinois, SW-LS, WE-SSD, lever escapement, 15J,
barred center pattern NI damascene, s#2491141. Gross weight of
assembled watch 124.2 dwt (193.2 g). The hunting cover has been
reworked and domed slightly, and then hand engraved to match the
snap-back, failing only to reproduce the ET surround. What typically
happens with this type of case is that it may be worn for years in OF
format, meaning that the snap-back is concealed throughout its life,
and remains mint, while the typically matching cover gets very worn.
Here, the engraver was able to trace the original engraving, but the
shoulder must have had hardly any ET left, leading to the freehand ET
improvisation.
