393. "J F Pitkin, Buffalo," lever fusee mvt only made
by Joseph Johnson, Liverpool, the Pitkin signature to be found on the
original gilt locking dust-cap, 46.84mm front plate diameter, KWKS,
WED, lever escapement with "Liverpool window" jeweling, 12-16J, DES,
gilt mvt, s#22643. After Henry Pitkin had made his first 50 watches
with his own name on them, the mvts then bore the "H & J F Pitkin"
signature up to s#377. Watch production was in Hartford until 1841,
when the business moved to New York, and struggled against imports such
as the present watch. We do not know what the Buffalo connection is,
but we do know that Johnson was active until 1851. This is the first
private label we have seen for James F Pitkin on an English import.
Wing Collection.
