capped lever escapement, 22J (although only marked 21J), Invar balance,
ribbed pattern NI damascene, s#39516437. The Elgin serial number list
shows a total production of only 200 of this grade, making it the
second most rare grade Elgin produced, while similar to the grade 478
with regular balance (184,500 produced) and the grade 581 with
solid/white balance (20,800 produced). The NAWCC Bulletin from April
2002 has an article showing a table of 22J B W Raymond grades; the type
of balance and type of barrel for this grade is left blank, apparently
for lack of a known example to study. This example has an Invar balance
with long overhang, similar to the Guillaume balance with cut in rim of
the bi-metallic wheel some distance away from the balance spar. There
were two lengths of overhang used, this being the longer one. The
present example has regular non-motor barrel. The Army may have
rejected this grade for some reason, or a lower cost or better
performing alternative was found, accounting for the low production and
possibly explaining the civilian casing.
