185. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, model 1858-A
(Geller system), series I, N-S (just over 19S), heavy coin silver
"D&Co" recased OF with silver cuvette (perhaps Duhme & Co,
Cincinnati, active 1871-1889), KWKS, restored WE-SSD with two-line
arched signature, lever escapement, 15J, gilt mvt, s#842, assembly #42.
Gross weight of assembled watch 100.8 dwt (156.7 g).
Estimate: $500 - $1,000

186. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, model 1858-A
(Geller system), series I, N-S (just over 19S), unusual Swiss 14K red
gold OF drum-style recase with squirrel hallmarks, gold cuvette drilled
widely after the fact for winding and setting, KWKS, WE-SSD with
two-line signature, lever escapement with upright pallets, 15J, gilt
mvt, s#1277. Gross weight of assembled watch 70.8 dwt (110.2 g). The
balance cock, unlike all but the earliest series I Howards, has
consistent assembly #77. Finding a Swiss gold case in American style is
quite odd, this one with back opening that is an ideal fit, the front
equipped with sizing ring and locator hole, frictioned in and
concealing the prior locator notch for an original Swiss mvt that was
stem-wind pin-set. The matching of the pendant and concealment of the
pin were perfectly executed, the winding holes not so well done, and
there is still play front to back that could be perfected with a
thicker sizing ring.
Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000

187. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, model 1858-B
(Geller system), series I with type B plates identified by Geller as
having only three lenticular cutouts, N-S (just over 19S), coin silver
Dueber recased HC, the silver cuvette cut out to allow winding, setting
and observation, KWKS, WE-SSD with single-line block signature, lever
escapement, 15J, gilt mvt, s#1481, matching assembly #81 under cock.
Gross weight of assembled watch 78.8 dwt (122.6 g).
Estimate: $500 - $1,000

188. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#419, assembly
#69 throughout, series I, model 1858-A (Geller system), N-S (just over
19S), warranted coin silver recased HC with ET silver cuvette, expertly
plugged and redrilled, gold hinges, KWKS, WE-SSD with two-line arched
signature, lever escapement with upright pallets, 15J, gilt mvt. Our
recent accumulated serial and assembly numbers for model 1858 include
s#404-(54) and the present watch, s#419-(69), which would be consistent
with the beginning of this assembly run at s#351-(01), but s#453-(#93)
is off by ten numbers, leaving an unexplained gap. Gross weight of
assembled watch 86.9 dwt (135.0 g).
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,600

189. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#701 in
original gold, the 601st watch produced, assembly #51 under cock,
series I, model 1858-A (Geller system), N-S (just over 19S), 14K tested
"B&M'C" stamped original HC with American eagle hallmark, ET gold
cuvette, KWKS, WE-SSD with two-line arched script signature, original
lever escapement with solid gold balance, pallets in the same plane as
the escape wheel, original adjustable banking pins by the tail, the
brass pins mounted in polished steel, maintaining power spring between
the plates, 15J, gilt mvt. Gross weight of assembled watch 92.0 dwt
(143.0 g). Case originality is confirmed by the single locator pin and
single case-hole at 43 minutes, the small original case half-screw
impression matching the diameter of the impression under the second
larger replacement case-screw with perfect concentricity, the only
alteration being the replaced lift spring that utilizes the original
hole with replaced screw holding against the face of the spring. This
exceptional original gold cased series I example further demonstrates
that the new design of lever escapement probably started with s#651,
assembly #01, abandoning both the upright pallets and the front plate
hole provisions for under-dial maintaining power spring. The unknown
casemaker's mark has been reported on another keywind watch, marked
"Greenwich Timekeeper" on face, s#24487, as well as another timepiece
at auction in 2015.
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000

190. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, series I, model
1858-A (type A with 5 lenticular cutouts, Geller system), N-S (just
over 19S), heavy coin silver "M&C" (unknown) original HC with ET
silver cuvette, case #3 with rampant lion hallmark (American but in
English tradition), KWKS, WE-SSD with two-line arched signature, lever
escapement with upright pallets, 15J, gilt mvt, s#518, assembly #68,
consistent with known data indicating assembly numbers in this range
starting at s#1 for s#451. Gross weight of assembled watch 83.5 dwt
(129.9 g). A top-notch, honest original example, last sold in our
galleries in 2015.
Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000

191. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, model 1858-E
(Geller system), series II, N-S (just over 19S), GF OF SW recase with

Estimate: $600 - $1,000

192. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, model 1858-E
(Geller system), series II, N-S (just over 19S), heavy quality
Ladd-style GF purpose-manufactured HC bearing J Boss 25-year
crowned-scales marking, KWKS, WE-SSD with two-line signature, lever
escapement with adjustable banking pins by pallet tail, 15J, gilt mvt,
s#2626. Gross weight of assembled watch 91.8 dwt (142.7 g). James Boss
of Philadelphia operated from 1860-1864 before consolidating with other
ventures, his name eventually appearing in Keystone J Boss marked cases
with the same crowned or uncrowned stampings. Attributed to James Boss
alone, just when this marking was introduced we cannot yet say, but
certainly the case is later than the mvt, fits perfectly, and has no
signs of any recasing whatsoever. Mounted internally, one case screw
has plenty of room behind a case spring to fully engage the lip, while
on the opposite side, travel of the opposing screw is limited by the
spring, but still catches securely. One might prefer to see a milled
space in the case-spring for full engagement of the screw. The case is
in beautiful condition, with elegantly engraved monogram on one side
and the probable date of case manufacture, 1885, on the other.
Estimate: $600 - $1,000

indicating the wrong direction, KWKS, WE-SSD with two-line script

217. APW - Illinois Bunn Special with DeLong
escapement, 16S, nickel alloy Illinois Watch Co display case marked on
both sides, SW-LS, Montgomery WE-DSD, fully capped DeLong lever
escapement with D-form upright pallets (literally "downright," as they
point downward from the back, with the pallet plane above the plane of
the escape wheel), 21J 6P adjusted for temperature, GJS, GT, radiant
step pattern NI damascene, s#3208055. The Charles DeLong escapement has
numerous interesting features, and still has the potential to be one of
the best lever escapement designs ever produced. Use of upright
D-shaped pallet stones has the advantage of engaging the escape wheel
tooth tangentially, thereby increasing the normal draw angle from 12
degrees to 27 degrees. Similar to the Brocot escapement for clocks,
this means that there will be less recoil when the stone is lifted away
from the tooth, resulting in more efficient transmission of power to
the balance. As well, the pallet itself has spring-clip ends that allow
the stones to be staked in position without any dependence on pitch
(cement). It is thought that about 100 watches were produced with this
escapement, but many were converted back to standard lever escapements
because, following disassembly, the depthing between the upright pallet
and escape wheel, being more critical than in traditional lever
escapement, could be thrown off if the hole jewels were not installed
in the same position, owing to typical eccentricity errors. The lower
escape wheel hole jewel has a punch mark on the setting that must
correspond to a punch mark on the pillar plate to achieve proper
depthing. To answer that problem, DeLong patented use of eccentric
pivots on the friction pallet arbor that would allow depthing
adjustment, and also a device for truing jewel settings, which
typically had some eccentricity as produced in those days.
