109. WW - Rolex Precision Officially Certified
Chronometer, nicknamed "Padellone" (big frying pan in Italian), triple
calendar and moon-phase, ref 8171, 38mm x 47mm to lug tips, 18K
original snap-case, genuine crocodile strap, the silvered dial
impeccably refinished as original, 18J 600 series caliber, s#09096
stamped between the lugs, ca 1954, triple signed, inside back ref 8171.
The model was introduced in 1949, and the earlier backs carried a light
serial number and crown that are almost always worn off. We cannot say
if that is true here, or if Rolex took the numbering in between the
lugs with the new numbering sequence established in 1954. Of the serial
numbers come to market, there are four ranges, right up to the end of
the first numbering system. If the inter-lug number is correctly
interpreted here, this would be from a fifth range of issue later in
the year. The model is very rare, with only 1000 produced in gold or
steel.
Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000

110. WW - Rolex Oyster Perpetual, ref 6205 without
Submariner marking, referred to by some as the "James Bond," domed
back, acrylic crystal, 38mm x 47mm to lug tips, stainless steel
original case, replaced bezel and insert, original gilt and black dial,
original pencil hands and "lollipop" seconds hand, original winding
crown, 17J cal 645, mvt #41019, rotor cover #F34441, s#21270 (? -band
wear prevents any definitive conclusion), triple signed, inside case
back ref 6205 with "octopus" logo. The 6200, 6204 and 6205 were all
introduced in 1954, not necessarily in numerical order. The 6205 is
very rare, with only a handful of examples ever to come to auction.

earliest model, ref 6204, acrylic crystal, 37mm x 47mm to lug tips,
stainless steel original case and riveted Oyster bracelet with

rotor mechanism covering mvt, s#988824, ca 1954, triple signed with
signed clasp, bracelet ref 7-68, inside back ref 6204. The crown on the
dial has straight pins rather than tapers up to the points, and the
Submariner marking seems thick graphically, unlike most examples we
see, at the same time the dial has aged much as an original would.

120. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#123, the 23rd
watch produced, assembly #15 under cock and repeated twice under dial,
the motion wheels each bearing matching assembly #5, very early series
I, model 1858-C divided plate (Geller system), N-S (just over 19S),
rare, very heavy coin silver OF original or purpose-made "JTS&Co"
case with matching serial #123, probably dating from the 1860's and
with ET silver cuvette, KWKS, WE-SSD without signature bearing maker's
initial "F" on back, lever escapement with upright pallets, 17J,
central settings in gold both front and back, dispensing with the
setting cup and virgule mount, gilt mvt with variant color as is
typical. Our recent accumulated serial and assembly numbers for model
1858 in the lower numbers are s#111-(#11), s#123-(#15), s#137-(#37),
s#151-(#61), s#175-(#17), s#209-(#34), s#234-(#59), s#404-(54),
s#453-(#93), s#490-(#40) and s#518-(#68), suggesting no dependable
pattern below s#300 or so. The present example has the maintaining
power spring under the dial operating against a squared screw, rarely
seen, but all of the early mvts have the holes pre-drilled and tapped
no matter which device is included. Gross weight of assembled watch
113.8 dwt (177.0 g). Among the earliest Howards known, patterns have
emerged suggesting that some initial mvts produced may have been set
aside for some time before casing and dialing. Several have come to
light with cases from the 1860's that follow the tradition of
purpose-made cases, carrying the precise number of the mvt. The present
example has a retailer's mark seen on early New York Watch Co watches,
by J T Scott & Co, who state they were "established 1847" and
"Jobbers in all American movements and cases." They were located two
buildings down from E Howard's New York office on Maiden Lane.
Somewhere published is a list of prominent clients of E Howard from the
1880s and J T Scott & Co is listed. (Thank you to Tom Rumpf and
Clint Geller for this information regarding the case mark!) This may be
the earliest E Howard & Co signed model 1858-C divided plate known,
the earlier s#111 being signed by Howard & Rice but with the
earliest known E Howard & Co signed dial. We are always eager to
hear of others, especially when examined in detail. The cock decoration
and markings, as well as barrel plate engraving, are identical for both
s#111 and s#123. Howard & Rice was formed after an early bankruptcy
of the Waltham venture, making watches with special upright pallet
lever escapement from Waltham material. With the inclusion of G P Reed
in the next post-Waltham venture, the model 1858 divided plate model
was created. We learn something new with each early example we
discover.

123. APW - Hamilton, 23J hunting grade 947 marked
"Extra," 18S, sidewinder format, GF Fahys recased HC, SW-LS, WE-DSD,
fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, GJS, DR, radiant
rope-twist pattern NI damascene with pinwheel surrounds, s#121845,
partial matching number on balance, 1218XX obscured by lathe polishing.
Considered a four-star watch in the Complete Guide. This watch, from a
designated production run of grade 943, was ultimately sold to
"...Anderson" with the designation "(947)" next to the name, the
writing before illegible, the subsequent two numbers sold to J W
Forsinger but without legible designation. The NAWCC website search
engine places total production at 310 for grade 947, but this early run
of grade 943 contains some watches upgraded to 947, with notations to
the side, and it is unknown if this count contains those. The page for
this serial 943 range is quite illegible, making establishment of total
947 production difficult.

124. APW - Hamilton, 23J hunting grade 947, 18S,

DSD, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, GJS, DR,
radiant rope-twist pattern NI damascene with pinwheel surrounds,
s#163895, matching number on balance. Considered a three-star watch in
the Complete Guide. This watch, from a designated production run of
grade 947, was sold to Otto Young & Co in 1914, the prior number
ultimately sold to J W Forsinger, and the subsequent number sold to A N
Anderson. The NAWCC website search engine places total grade 947
production at 310, but there is an early run of grade 943 that contains
some watches upgraded to 947, with notations to the side, and it is
unknown if this count contains those. At least one of the 943 pages is
quite illegible, making it difficult to establish just what was
produced.

marked on central bridge, model 10 grade 710, total production of 30 or
less in this run, six of which have been documented, 16S, GF OF
Keystone J Boss recase, SW-LS, WE-DSD signed "Washington Watch Co,"

The only other Greenwich example from this run we have had is
s#3377372, which we have handled three times in the last 10 years.
Thanks to the excellent research of Fred Hansen, we now know that the
total production of model 9 grade 770 was 50 in one run, while the
total production of model 10 grade 710 was 70 over three runs, the
first one being a sub-run of only ten watches within a larger mixed
run. Thank you Fred!.

128. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#175, the 75th
watch produced, assembly #17, very early series I, model 1858-A (Geller
system), N-S (just over 19S), heavy coin silver G W Luce OF recase with
fairly good alignment, other locator pin holes, ET silver cuvette,
hunting back, KWKS, WE-SSD with elegant two-line script signature,
lever escapement with upright pallets, 15J, gilt mvt. As we accumulate
very early production examples, we recall s#111, the 11th watch
produced, with original Howard & Rice plates, which carried the
matching assembly #11 in the same three locations. Photos under the
dial of the present watch and s#111 are identical except that the
maintaining power click spring operates under the dial against a square
screw, rather than the spring being between the plates. Our recent
accumulated serial and assembly numbers for model 1858 in the lower
numbers are s#111-(#11), s#137-(#37), s#175-(#17), s#209-(#34),
s#234-(#59), s#404-(54), s#453-(#93), s#490-(#40) and s#518-(#68). All
have the identical under-dial layout with two plate holes for
under-dial version of the retaining power spring, used only in the
present example and s#209, unused in all others. Only the orientation
of the assembly number on the pillar plate of #11 is rotated 90 degrees
unlike subsequent examples.

129. APW - E Howard & Co, Boston, s#234, the 134th
watch produced, assembly #59 throughout, early series I, model 1858-A
(Geller system), N-S (just over 19S), 18K marked and tested C&AP
recased HC with ET gold cuvette, KWKS, WE-SSD with two-line arched
script signature, lever escapement with upright pallets, 15J, gilt mvt.
Our recent accumulated serial and assembly numbers for model 1858 in
the lower numbers are s#111-(#11), s#137-(#37), s#175-(#17),
s#209-(#34), s#234-(#59), s#404-(54), s#453-(#93), s#490-(#40) and
s#518-(#68). All these prior numbers have the identical under-dial
layout with two plate holes for under-dial version of the retaining
power spring seen only in s#175 and s#209, with all other locator holes
clean and screw-holes threaded. While the case has no other
screw-marks, and alignment is nearly perfect, the single locator
pin-hole at 7 does not correspond to two pin-sites on the pillar plate,
and the installed pin beneath one of these goes below the internal
ridge to hold, but not orient, the mvt in the case. Gross weight of
assembled watch 74.2 dwt (115.4 g).
Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000

130. APW - Howard & Rice, Boston Watch Co, upright
pallet escapement, 18S, coin silver OF original CJ&Bro case (C
Jacot & Bro, Philadelphia, 1852-1871), ET silver cuvette, American
eagle hallmark, KWKS, WE-SS pinned-foot dial, lever escapement of style
unique to Howard & Rice, with pallet floating below the plane of
the escape wheel, and broad perpendicular pallet stones meeting the
club teeth, 15J, gilt mvt with stamped signature, s#6193. The mvt has
another feature in that the regulator curb is actually a hole in an
adjustable pin looking like a screw, which can aid in directing the
curbing action, as seen with s#6149. The Howard & Rice watches were
of a new design, finishing material from the defunct Boston Watch Co
(Waltham) at the Howard & Davis factory in Boston, ca 1857-8, just
prior to Howard's launch of his own famous venture. Production was
probably less than 500.
